The Washington, Dec 5 report states twenty percent of the navy's wartime personnel or about 100,000 men will be discharged as quickly as possible with care for conduct and service. Private yachts and motorboats used for war are being returned to owners. Camp Lewis, Tacoma, reports daily army discharges while new enlistments for draft evaders and deserters continue, with orders to induct some and bar others from service. Naval students in schools will finish training and be discharged, with graduates of paymasters and ensign schools to be commissioned in the reserve.
Washington announces three soldiers receive the Medal of Honor the nation’s highest decoration for valor. Charles Whittlesey and George McMurtry led the 308th Infantry’s lost battalion in the Argonne forest siege. Thomas Neibaur halted a German charge at Cote de Chatillon and captured thirteen enemies.
Beginning Monday large groups of discharged soldiers will be sent home by special trains to San Francisco destinations within California. The Forty fourth infantry will base in San Francisco. one battalion to be at Fort Lawton, Washington. Non declarant aliens, including 40 Turks and Bulgarians, are discharged. Over 250 officers, mainly lieutenants of the Thirteenth division, are reassigned to the 166th depot brigade and nearly all will be mustered out soon.
