A Tokyo conference between emigration agencies and Foreign Minister Hayashi led to a firm pledge to closely limit Japanese emigration to the United States and Canada. Some agency members reacted angrily but Hayashi dismissed the committee and stood by the policy with no compromise.
A conference in Washington aimed at linking the commerce and labor departments with national commercial bodies. Secretary Straus and Secretary Root led the meeting with delegates from chambers of commerce and boards of trade from New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Galveston, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and other cities. The gathering was preliminary, with a probable outcome of forming a permanent advisory council representing commercial bodies nationwide.
J. W. Parker appeared before Police Judge Kane charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. He waived examination and was bound over to the district court in 500 bonds, jailed for lack of sureties. He allegedly deceived an aged man, Frank Singleton, by posing as a Short Line boss and promising Montana railroad passage for 1.
Patrick Calhon, president of United Railways, faces fourteen indictments for offering bribes tied to an overhead trolley franchise. Judge Lawler postponed the trial to Monday as Assistant District Attorney Heney seeks to locate former Supervisor James L. Gallagher last heard from in New York. The case caps a wave of bribery prosecutions in the city.
In Boise Idaho on May fifth the Pettibone trial moved forward with juror examinations. The state exercised its sixth peremptory challenge against J H Clark. Charles Yerrington a Boise street conductor and union member was accepted by both sides.
Boston March 5 reports signs of recovery from the recent business depression as oil operations resume at mills across New England after weeks of shutdowns.
Secretary of War Taft left Petersburg for Berlin and will spend a few hours there. Russian authorities say the visit passed without incident. University students were denied permission to send a deputation to greet Taft, feared as cover for a revolutionary demonstration. Police guarded hotel corridors to prevent harassment by anarchists.
E. E. Watrous, formerly with the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone in Salt Lake, declares he has perfected a placer mining machine near Rosa, Idaho, to save all flake gold from the Snake and Green rivers. He plans to patent the invention and says tens of miles along the Snake may yield abundant gold per yard, a claim supported by demonstrations of collecting every particle of gold in the machine.
Thirteen people were seriously injured today when an eastbound Pennsylvania passenger train derailed after leaving the station. Initial reports indicate the cause was a frozen switch or improper switching procedure.
Kansas City action center James T. Bradley placed in control by the comptroller after the National Bank of Commerce did not open. Deposits fell from about 35 million to under 17 million since August 22. two small branches suspended. Stock market in New York felt the impact but not seriously.
Senator Heyburn introduces bills proposing a $100,000 federal building for Pocatello plus one for Lewiston, along with Idaho projects including land surveys, a boundary line with Washington, fish culture, Coeur d Alenes park, ramie silk efforts, second homesteads for honest entrymen, 1 000 000 acres under the Carey act, Eastport as a subport of entry, commerce act amendments, a national board of incorporations for a mines department, 150 extra Capitol sections, and irrigation-related homestead leaves of absence.
Federal judge William H. Hunt halted Great Northern from collecting excess over the old rate on a new tariff that went into effect November 1. The injunction delays the higher charge until the Interstate Commerce Commission rules on the merits. The case, brought by Flathead County lumbermen, tests federal jurisdiction over rate disputes before I C C action.
John Hart, a coachman for Superintendent George Winter of the Waterworks, was struck about 9 o clock last night near Fremont street after crossing the bridge. An unknown assailant knocked him unconscious with a revolver and fled. Hart was treated at the fire station and thinks he was mistaken for another man with a grievance.
The Typographical Union of Pocatello will host a unique event at McNichols and Wright hall on Christmas Eve. A printing press will operate inside the hall and an ample number of sheets will be produced every half hour featuring local hits and gags for the audience.
In Augusta Arkansas on December 5 a Black individual, described as crazed by cocaine, attacked several white people, including two women, one of whom is not expected to survive. A posse captured the assailant after the incident.
Three criminal cases on the Downey saloon burglary docket were postponed until next term. Jurors are released and no trials set this term. Judge Budger granted divorces for May Ohl vs John and Hattie Pearson vs John, with Gray & Boyd as counsel. A divorce in Tuttle vs Tuttle was also granted for default.
Charles Bowers also known as Billy Smith voluntarily surrendered in Fort Collins and confessed to killing a man in 1902. Colorado officials released him on telegraphic instructions from Wyoming officials. two Pocatello men corroborated Bowers story and said the shooting was in self defense. He will resume using his Pocatel lo name and is described as among the happiest men in the Gate City. Col J W A Ferguson says an appeal in the suit against the Short Line for 85 85 will be dismissed as the judgment was paid.
A gathering last night at Davis and Holzheimer's offices discussed forming a Business Men's association to promote the city's upbuilding. Another meeting is planned for tomorrow night to complete the organization.
Dr. C N Rooker a longtime Pocatello physician died shortly before noon at the state mental hospital in Blackfoot where he had been a patient. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 PM from the Masonic temple with Masonic Fraternity Eagles and Spanish War veterans in attendance. He leaves a wife two children and a daughter from a previous marriage.
The Congregational church youth group hosts a social Friday evening December 6 with a short musical program and refreshments in the Sunday school rooms. Admission is 15 cents and all are invited. Performances include Miss Myrtle McMannis, Frances Whittlesey, Katie Tupper, O Drew Standrod, Prof. Steendahl, Virgil Samms, Ruth and Norma Kneale. Gate City Commandery Knights Templars meet at the Masonic lodge room for the year-end session tonight with emphasis on strong attendance.
