West Makes Dig Gains Highlight 1948 Soil District Growth
Farmers across the Pacific coast region expanded soil conservation efforts in 1948 with 28 new districts and larger district boundaries. Idaho added two districts, bringing total to 26, and 32 percent of Idaho’s land area is now under districts. The U S Soil Conservation Service reports strong gains in land production and widespread adoption of conservation practices despite dust storms floods and drought.

What Is Productive Land
Norman A Berg explains productive land differs from other resources in needing concurrent use and maintenance to stay productive. It lies only on the surface, is not permanent, and once fertile soil is lost it cannot be practically restored. Gullies, over-wet or dry land, shallow soil on slopes, and bedrock limit usable land, making proper conservation essential.
Contour Furrows Mistaken for Sheep Trails Near Pocatello
Trail-like lines surrounding Pocatello are contour furrows created to aid soil conservation, not sheep paths as commonly believed. The lines shape hillside runoff and reduce erosion, aligning with land management practices in the region.

No Single Agency Can Handle Job
This soil conservation effort is too large for any one group to manage alone. It requires teamwork among the Soil Conservation Service, State Extension Service, State Experiment Station, State College, and collaboration with agricultural departments, Soil Conservation Districts, 4-H, Future Farmers, and related land stakeholders.

Keeping Organic Matter In Dry Farm Soils
Research at Tetonia Idaho shows dry farms lose 25 to 50 percent of soil organic matter. Surface straw mulching reduces erosion and supports yields. A sweet clover rotation or alfalfa rotation builds organic matter and improves soil texture, boosting nitrogen for wheat and protein content. Contact local Soil Conservation District for details.
