Railroads Seek 13 Percent Freight Increase to Cover Wage Rise
Railroads asked the Interstate Commerce Commission to raise freight rates from 8 to 13 percent starting Oct. 1. If approved, shippers would pay an additional 1.092 billion dollars annually, bringing total rail freight revenue gains since the war to 4.1 billion. The rise funds a 10 cent hourly wage increase for 175,000 rail workers, with a broader pattern for third round wage talks. A government official said President Truman may appoint a fact finding board within days, delaying a strike that could halt work of about 1 million workers. The 10 cent raise goes into effect Saturday Oct. 16.
