Wage Bill Fight Shapes 1949 Wage Hour Debate
The Republican Southern Democratic coalition plans a repeat for the wage hour bill to bypass the Rules Committee. The proposal would raise the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour, potentially covering 5 million workers, with a Lucas substitute proposing 65 cents for 1949 and gradual changes thereafter. The Democratic platform supports 75 cents and broader coverage, while opponents argue the Lucas bill would add few new workers and may remove some currently covered.
