U.S. Takes Over Major Role In Area
The United States and Britain scrapped their year old German compact and signed a new accord. It gives the United States the major voice in administering the joint occupation zone and responsibility for seven eighths of the expenses. The U.S. will contribute about 800 million dollars of the 921 million needed for essential German imports from November 1947 to December 1948. Imports will be limited to minimum to prevent disease and unrest. The accord does not alter costs for maintaining allied forces, and Congress will be asked to approve the increased U.S. financial duty. The U.S. will gain a larger voice in directing the joint export import and foreign exchange agencies.
