Roff Dies of Injuries in Reno

State Auditor Nate Roff died at his Reno home on October 2 from injuries from a buggy accident a week earlier. He had been a longtime Nevadan public figure, former Washoe County state senator, and recent state auditor appointee by Governor Sparks. He had just completed a statewide tour visiting Pioche. The state mourns the loss of a courageous and substantial citizen.

Ely Valley Installs Whim and Expands Mining Work West of Town

Ely Valley prepares for intensified mining activity as a whim arrives daily for immediate shaft sinking planned to a depth of 300 feet near the Susan Duster shoot. Edward Thomarson directs the California Pioche venture with George Weddell, Chas Miller, and William Lloyd backing the project. Wm Wheatley supervises locally as two carloads of Oregon timber are readied for timbering the shaft while Proche Livery Stable dissolves its partnership with Ralph DeWitt taking full control. Frank Sherwood opens a new restaurant at Main and Lacour with plans for top service and a casino.

Prisoner Escapes From County Jail in Assault Case

A Mexican prisoner awaiting grand jury action on an assault with intent to kill escaped last evening from the county jail. Deputies found no trace after a brief check by the jail roof. The fugitives likely fled toward Spring Valley. Meanwhile Chas Blair, injured when trampled by a cow, died Wednesday from internal injuries, with recovery deemed doubtful.

Rails Laid To Pioche Depot Site Sparks New Railroad

Pioche gains a railroad as rails reach the Smelter site and temporary cribbing gives way to permanent bridges. A large locomotive will be needed to move traffic, sidetracks and ore bins are under construction by the Nevada-Utah Company, and passenger plus freight service will start soon with Agent Montgomery moved from Panaca.

Churich Property Sold to Ohio-Nevada Mining Co

Col W B MacSherry acting for the Ohio Nevada Mining Company paid 6500 dollars on the 25000 dollar purchase of the Churich property south of town. The shaft shows over 100 feet retimbering depth with estimates of 200 to 300 feet from earlier work. The site sits in a premier mineral belt and the company plans extensive, vigorous development.

Saloon Building Burglarized in Local Heist

The Nichols and Egan saloon building suffered a burglary last week with valuable property taken. Thieves entered through a rear window after hours, taking a gold watch a revolver two bottles of champagne and coins. Police have no solid lead and suspect amateur thieves similar to recent chicken thefts, promising vigorous prosecution.

Diamond Drill To Open New Mining Prospects In Pioche

W L Butler of Butler and McKinnon Diamond Drill Co visits Pioche Montana and orders a drill. Nevada Des Moines property will receive first work north of town, with many firms expected to follow. The drill promises economical prospecting and may unlock hidden ore bodies, aiding owners of modest means and boosting Pioche’s development.
