A first person reminiscence recounts a chaotic wartime episode filled with fatigue, shortages, and a jailbreaklike attempt to steal whisky from a quartermaster’s tobacco cellar. The narrator describes long marches, coffee rituals, revelry, and a tense night waiting for the war to end, culminating in a dangerous underground drill into a tobacco warehouse.
The article notes convicts in eastern Siberia view life there as not wholly cursed. Marriage exists without courtship, as convicts apply to the overseer for a wife. A three day probation follows, and if temper matches fail, twenty five lashes and another wife await, until contentment. It also mentions antiquarians in Mexico starting an academy to teach the Aztec age.
Prof Cherry of Chicago reports a new desulphurizing method tested on rebellious ores. An upright retort process with superheated steam and air aims to separate sulphur and arsenic, yielding oxidized minerals and potentially magnetic iron with simplified treatment. The technique requires careful heat and pressure control to avoid volatilization and maximize purification.
