A massive prairie fire swept across the Cal Mopesta region near Colonel Caleb Dorsey’s ranch, burning over a thousand acres of grain and destroying multiple ranches entries. Fire fighters battled high winds for hours, saving some properties but incurring heavy losses including a threshing machine and several tenant homes. Dozens injured from burns sought aid as crews worked to contain the blaze that began around 10 o'clock and was controlled by 8:90.
Colonel Albert O. Boone died in the city last night at 1:37 after a long frontier career. He was a veteran trader and guide who accompanied General Ashley and Kit Carson, aided by Brigham, and helped open the Rocky Mountain region. Born in Kentucky, Boone spent years in Wyoming and Colorado as trader and Indian agent, later serving as Indian Commissioner and explorer. He leaves five daughters and a widow, with a long record of trading, trapping, and frontier service across St. Louis to Colorado and beyond.
