James Royle Publishing Agent informs subscribers in Tenn as two dollars and fifty cents in advance and three dollars after year end. Letters regarding business go to the Publishing Agent and those to the editorial department to the Epirox, with postage paid in all cases.
The House grants leave as Mr. Adams seeks to explain his petitions course. He recounts threats of assassination over abolition petitions and Haiti recognition, defends presenting each memorial separately, and affirms his continued stance on slavery and Haiti amid partisan pressure.
A Clermont county elder denounces Democratic leaders on abolition, recalling early anti slavery sentiment in the county. He notes historic free slaves and a Baptist land grant for worship, urging future generations to embed anti slavery principles in wills and reflect on Clermont presses before Van Buren era.
In Colvansus on January 28, 1839 a heated session debated the use of the State House for a Colonization Society meeting. Mr Gurley of the American Colonization Society praised Liberia and argued for black self-help, while abolitionists faced political resistance amid a broader struggle over slavery and race in the state legislature. The speech praised African colonization and questioned abolitionist aims.
MO CLARKE Cor Sec reports anti slavery efforts in Dearborn and Ripley counties Indiana. He notes lectures by L D Bulls, formation of the Co. Anti Slavery Society, and plans for agents and a Manchester library. He praises Birney backed by the parent society and calls for continued support and deposits of publications.
The Dearborn County anti slavery society held a meeting at the stone chapel on Tanner's Creek January 1 1839. Jn Clarke presided with S H Hansell and John Hansell chosen secretaries. E spoke on emancipation and equal rights citing the declaration of independence and the evil of slavery as a moral wrong.
