A Town in a top corn-producing district sees farm land values fall from about 110 per acre to under 40 amid six-year decline. Despite record corn production in 1906 and strong railroad access, population and prosperity have declined, with loss of settlement and wealth noted by a contemporary observer.
Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson reports rising demand for improved corn seed. Across states, breeders associations and experiment stations collaborate to produce high yielding strains suited to diverse soils and climates. In Maryland Potomac Flats tests a duplicated Maryland strain outyielded top U.S. varieties, while a four year Ohio selection shows a gain of ten bushels per acre.
Investigation shows the city once prospered as a trade hub with large mail order houses drawing Chicago merchants. Competition led to business closures and social decline. Now only a hardware shop, a rain elevator, a general store, and a grocery remain as farms nearby struggle without cash flow or stores, awaiting rail orders. James Sevens.

At a Maumee Valley Pioneer Society executive committee meeting in D K Holl enbeck s office arrangements were made to purchase Fort Meigs Park a 6 acre tract including the Port and river front between the river fort and burying grounds of the Pennsylvania Blues. The land will cost 10800 or 890 per acre with the state owning 44 acres. bids will be sought for a monument and the site will become a national preserve once the deed and abstract are complete.
Representative Reed supports the constitutional amendment allowing 50 000 voters to force a state wide vote on any law the people oppose and to propose laws by petition if the legislature refuses. He cites a 500 name petition from Wood County and urges continued public education on the measure.
Hobart reports a sequence of visits with Frank J Harvey and John Niete hosting on Monday evening alongside Jacob H Schramm and family. Roward Mudgo and Join Bench sod families hosted Sunday. John Bauman saw Chas Swartz and family Friday evening. Edward Bench and Miss Mary were callers. a Niece visited William Bench Saturday. Miss Mary Niece of East Toledo visits John Geuch and family this week. Hay at twenty dollars a ton is set to raise town pride, with a bay seat in his hair.
Henry Bohn files in common pleas for divorce from Katherine Bohn alleging marriage on October 22, 1905 and separation after she left April 16, 1907 with William Metzker who is now in Sandusky. He seeks to bar her from any dower in his property and cites his $500 a month wage and free housing as sufficient support.
Judge Fries on Saturday issued several entries including Ross Titus v Frank Mearing et al with report of receiver approved and discharged, Acacia Shaffer v Ed Heckert with motion for new trial overruled, Elizabeth Myera v Charles R Stewart decree for partition, Nobles v Nobles divorce and child custody granted with alimony, First National Bank of North Baltimore v George Copus et al judgment for plaintiff, and other cases with leave to amend or new parties.

An aged visitor with Rev Qalkins at Millbury died Monday morning from liver cancer. Interment will be in Walbridge cemetery.
The Matinee club of Prairie Depot will stage the first race of the season on Saturday, June 5. The program includes trotting pacing and a free-for-all race planned for the meet day. Horsemen are asked to address J. L. Cahill secretary at Prairie Depot for particulars.
Miss Sadie Heine heard a whiz and a loud crack then found a forty five caliber bullet hole in the ceiling above a couch in the upstairs room. The shot caused no reported injuries and no one confirmed sight or sound of the gun as neighbors heard nothing, leaving the origin a mystery.
The court affirmed a lower court ruling in Watterson v Halliday, determining that church property not used for religious purposes is taxable under state law. The case, against Bishop Watterson, addressed taxes on church residences and other properties, with parsonages paid under protest while awaiting the decision.
