First Bell Hung in a Tree at Spafford Hotel Perryeburg

A. M. Day owns a historic bell from the 1880s made in Detroit by S. Davis. It rang at the Spafford hotel in Perrysburg, was stolen and recovered after a four day search, mounted atop the hotel, then passed to D. M. Day and now rests in Delaware. The bell is valued at many hundreds of dollars and remains unsold.

Forgery Case in Dowling Leads to Prison Term

On October 1 1890 John Toole of Dowling offered to sell a 175 pound note signed by his father in law Jacob Homminger. The note was identified as forged and Toole later pleaded guilty before Judge Melhorn, receiving a two year penitentiary sentence. This marked a rare loss for the bank in 25 years under cashier Witt Me Hanson. Separately, a Shelby county Indiana judge sought an injunction to bar clergy and magistrates from marrying Snodgrass to a neighboring girl, described as a case of true love.

Two Men Killed at Crossing on the T and C Track

Two men Nick Bird and Jack Doty died when a northbound train of the TAG O C R R struck their buggy at Bowling Green as they reportedly drank heavily. The horse was killed, the buggy destroyed, Bird’s head severed, and Doty severely bruised. The engineer applied air brakes but could not stop in time. coroners inquest to be held.
