Meridian Alabama reels after a devastating tornado in the city center, killing hundreds and destroying blocks of buildings. Fire follows the collapse, cutting power and hindering rescue as trains and telegraph lines fail and the path of destruction stretches across major depots, hotels, and factories with widespread casualties.
Prosecuting Attorney McBroom filed an injunction suit to stop Edwin D. Ricketts from receiving $100 for legal services in the Elizabeth Pinkstock murder case. Judge Martin ruled Pinkstock indigent but lacking title to land. Ricketts had been paid after the court refused the injunction and ordered funds disbursed. The commissioners and county officials faced no power to alter compensation in a first degree murder case.
Governor Pattison faces scrutiny over three appointments to the State Board of Charities and Corrections, amid partisan balance concerns. Senate confirmation disputed, while General Assembly debates adjournment and welfare bills as temperance battles loom.
Springfield March 5 Trainman Mark M. Davis of Columbus died at 8:20 this morning in a local hospital after being shot by Edward Dean colored last Monday night in the Big Four railroad yards. Davis, 22, was conscious briefly after the shooting. He is survived by his father a Columbus lawyer mother sister Letia and brother Frank. An affidavit charging Dean with shooting with intent to kill was changed to murder in the first degree. State fire marshal detectives are gathering evidence as a special grand jury may be convened to probe rioters and possible militia involvement. James Burk 50 monist was fined 100 and costs for violating mayor’s saloon exclusion.
Washington reports that opponents concede passage of the railroad rate bill as sent from the House, with no president's amendment for judicial review possible. Democrats split on an amendment, while Republicans push other measures dead. In Columbus, changes to the Bronson primary bill focus on direct voting for district delegates and keeping district candidates via conventions.
A report outlines proposals to end cumbersome primary elections by allowing Cheyanias to be elected at large or by wards, with apportionment to be decided by the party. Amendments, drafted by Representative Bronson and election committee members, will be prepared this week. The Board of Health meeting adjourned after a dispute over Officer Win Fields duties. Ex Governor Janee Stephen Mogg of Texas found dead in bed at his residence in Toneton. Governor James S. Hogg, born 1851 in Rusk County, died in Houston while en route to a sanitarium. He rose from humble beginnings to become attorney general and governor, renowned for opposing railroads and Standard Oil. Funeral arrangements include a special train and wide-state attendance.
