Porto Rico seeks aid amid tax dispute and free trade plea
Canton, July 22. Gov. Charles H. Allen traveled from Washington to Canton and shared time with the President at the McKinley home. He aimed to present the Porto Rican revolution over inland taxation and the act granting free trade with the United States. The President will respond on July 25, the date of American troops’ landing anniversary, with a proclamation on free trade. Allen plans possible relief after duties, noting Porto Rico’s bright future and eager populace. He also described education enthusiasm and cordial relations with natives.
