Madrid newspapers discuss imminent ministerial crisis over peace negotiations with Spain split on surrender terms. Imparcial argues Spain could gain leverage if Santiago and Manila fall and Porto Rico is captured, shaping American terms. Madrid July 14 reports say peace with the United States is being discussed broadly. Conservative papers claim Spain would accept peace if Cuba is sacrificed but oppose any seizure of Porto Rico or the Philippines or a large indemnity. A cabinet view suggests peace might come if terms are fair. A Franco-Spanish foreign affairs meeting and Cambon’s Washington mission are linked to locating acceptable terms. Aguinaldo is patrolling the coast with a squadron of merchantmen, per a Trollo dispatch.
The dispatch notes two bands of Insurgents defeated at Cebu and three leaders captured and shot. It adds there is no other news from the islands. Washington reports estimate prize money for Sampoon’s fleet and naval officers, with possible Congress appropriation. Assistant Naval Constructor Richmond P. Hobson arrives aboard the flagship New York to a cheering crew. Colonel John Jacob Astor joins the crowd as Hobson recounts his Morro Castle imprisonment, the battle near Santiago, and his subsequent exchange. The New York men applaud, describing the daring escape and the fierce bombardment they endured together.
An imposing monument to fallen soldiers will be dedicated at the cemetery this evening at six o'clock followed by a ping raising. The exercises, under the J EK Rochester Post, G A TR, will feature good music and able speakers. Citizens are invited to attend.
Ladies of Logan are invited to meet at the Prophyterian church Monday at 7 o'clock p.m. to discuss providing shanties and other aid for soldiers in camp and hospital facilities.
A Monday afternoon city road race attracted residents to watch twelve riders contest a ten lap 1 1/2 mile course through Hunter Spring Front Depot streets. Earl Lindley won in 47:56 earning a solid gold medal. runners-up received various prizes including subscriptions, lamps, and apparel. The full 15 mile distance was completed in 47:66 by the winner and 67:08 by the last rider, a near ten minute gap.

George Haynes from Laurelville fought John Condron in a July Fourth prize bout lasting four rounds in a hollow near Laurel. Condron was knocked unconscious by Haynes right hand and fled the ring. Abraham Cook suffers severe scalding on the left leg from a steam thresher valve. condition doubtful. Miss Bessie Grace Inboden visits Elizabeth Kistler at Swarts P O last week.
The Nelsonville Register reports that a son of Cooney Webb formerly of Thin City was drowned in the Logan River. He was about 16 years old. The note questions the source of the information and urges caution about the report.
