Postmasters Deed at Way Side Ends in Double Tragedy

In Washington state 15 miles north of Spokane George Vroman postmaster and local merchant shot his 6 year old daughter then killed himself both dying shortly after. His wife had just won a divorce on cruelty charges and the children were custody to her. Chicago note reports Henry Albert fatally shot his wife and then killed himself at 1061 North California Avenue after she refused to resume cohabitation.

Independent coal interests clash with rail lines in Ohio suits

In Logan and Dueyrua courts, the Independent coal dealers and miners filed quo warranto actions against the Hocking Valley, Toledo and Ohio Central, Kanawha and Michigan roads. They allege violations of a law preventing one railway from purchasing or absorbing a competing line and claim ties among Hocking Valley, Ohio Central, and Kanawha and Michigan, with J P Morgan & Co and Central Trust Co named in the relationships.

Funeral for United States Senator Sewell Held in Camden

The funeral of the late United States Senator William Joyce Sewell was held at the Sewell mansion. Public viewing ran from 10 to 1 with thousands passing the bier. Services led by Bishop Bearborough, Protestant Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, Rev. A. R. Roderick officiating. Military honors included eight sergeants, a caisson, and 18 gun salutes at grave from state and federal troops. Notables such as Secretary of War Root and Gov. Voorhees attended.

Medal for Schley by Maryland junior order council

A Maryland council of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics presented Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley with a diamond studded medal in his Washington apartments. The ceremony was conducted by a committee from the council that traveled from Dallas.

Northern Pacific merger fight moves to federal stage

In Minneapolis the Northern Pacific case against Powers is transferred to federal court after Judge Lochren orders appearance to show cause why injunction should not be dissolved. Powers contends retirement of preferred stock harms his common stock rights. NP argues retirement legal and unrelated to the merger. Inquest Held Over Lemon Extract Death Near Paris

Coroner Roberts presided as William King, a farmer living southeast of Paris, died after drinking eight 2-ounce bottles of Lemon extract. The inquest recommended the grand jury investigate and prosecute merchants selling extract for drinking, the fifth such death in the Bly vicinity recently.

Dog Guards Girl From Foe Tramps Near Perrynburg

A large shepherd dog restrained two tramps who attempted to assault 14 year old Alpena Courtney near Perrynburg. The dog bit the men repeatedly, enabling the girl to escape unharmed as neighbors intervened. Police began investigations into the attempted crime and the dog’s actions are being praised by residents.

A fierce norther whipped the Colombian coast forcing steamers to struggle from the reefs to Porto Bello while the Hero, a Norwegian vessel under Captain Peterson from Baltimore, grounded at Christopher Columbus and suffers a total loss of power. Strong seas and winds continue, damaging the Pacific Mail Wook and other property.

Flood Recedes as Death Toll Stabilizes in Deep South

Frost follows flood as rivers drop across Alabama and Georgia. At West Point the wreckage from the disaster is cleared and three drowning victims are recovered. Columbia Georgia reports five feet fall in the Chattoochee River with freezing temps extending toward the Florida line.
