The House Territories Committee approved Delegate Anthony Dimond’s $2,000,000 measure to buy reindeer abattoirs and corrals from white owners to redistribute the animals to Alaska natives. Dimond cited white monopoly on deer as the problem prompting the plan.

American Fishermen Count 26 Foreign Fishing Boats Off Bristol Bay

LIBBYVILLE Alaska June 25 Two thousand tense American fishermen counted 26 large foreign boats and floating canneries in Bristol Bay amid the world’s largest Red salmon run. Michael Hatton of the Territorial Fisheries Bureau said some vessels appeared Japanese and that some were within the three mile limit. He drew alongside a Japanese boat but was not welcomed and warned that foreign gear could wipe out salmon in five to six years.

Early Kougarok dredging kicks off season near Taylor

Begin Operations Reports from the Kougarok said that J. J. Keenan fed commenced hydraulic operations near Taylor in the Kougarok yesterday. The dredge on the Kougarok River at Taylor, operated by Kougarok Consolidated Placers Inc., began digging rich gravels after being serviced for an active season. With such an early start this season should be exceptionally successful, it was said.

An Alaska Road Commission railroad crew reports the Kangarok Tramway is opened to Mile 50 after snow and glacier removal and track alignment. The work is ongoing to extend the line toward Shelton and Burker Hill in the near future.
