Edes told the Engineers Club that preliminary work must precede Alaska railroad construction and that actual construction likely would not begin before 1916. A large outfitting for Alaska was being shipped, with surveys of routes to occupy much of the summer as reports to Washington are prepared.
B D Blakslee a noted Alaska engineer and former Nome and Juneau city engineer is named assistant engineer to the Alaska railroad commission. Edes and Mears sail for Alaska with eighty survey crew and ninety horses as equipment moves to Ship Creek to establish interior camps.

A violent wind and rain storm disrupted the Confederate dead monument unveiling at Arlington Park. President Wilson was midway through his address when the tempest forced him to end the ceremony and seek shelter.
Lewis Cass Ledyard a New York financier testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission and assailed Charles Mellen accusing him of false statements. Ledyard denied Mellen’s alleged indictment shielding Morgan and contended Mellen misrepresented methods in New Haven and allied railroads.
A severe wind and rain storm sweeps western and southern Japan causing loss of life and heavy property damage. Communications to the interior are cut, with hundreds feared drowned as valleys flood and rivers rise.
Secretary McAdoo announced that the reserve banks have been organized and will be ready for business by August first. He said most who opposed them now support their role as a safeguard against future financial downturns. Flour is cheap and bread costs 5 cents at North Pole Baker and Anvil Bakery.
Seattle dispatch notes Dr. Jones deputy commissioner of fisheries is en route to commence investigations of Alaska fisheries. He arrives in Juneau aboard the Admiral Sampson and plans to travel along the coast aboard the Altetruss. Before departure he chartered the Melville Dollar to ship 2000 tons of lumber and supplies to the Tering sea islands for natives. The Melville Dollar will sail on a four hour trip in about ten days.
In Chicago a divorce suit by Schumann Heinck against William Rapp Jr. opened with jurors drawn and testimony under way. Schumann Heinck accused Rapp of intimate relations with Catherine Dean of New York during cross examination she denied love for Edward McNamara. Rapp counters with allegations of Mrs. Heinck's closeness to McNamara as a challenge to the suit. A separate note from Seattle reports the Buford transport heading to sail with the Fourteenth Infantry to relieve the Thirtieth in Alaska and distribute along the coast. Also listed are bakery ads and a whiskey distillery entry in the same issue.
Seattle board of engineers selects James I. McPherson of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce to lead a party surveying the Alaska rail line between the Knik and Kuskokwim rivers. The study aims to assess suitability for farming and stock raising, with a full report on resources and potential. The story also notes a separate item about 100 tons of flour from two bakeries.
