Charles E Penn, 73, retired banker and longtime New Vienna Bank employee, died Wednesday in Columbus. Born in East Monroe Ohio, he worked in banking and insurance, later residing in Columbus. He leaves a son Morgan Penn and nephews Howard and Burch, with two brothers, Burch and William, deceased. His wife Daisy CoVan had died earlier.

The first premium wheat at the New Vienna Farm Bureau was brought in by Robert L. Riley from the Sara E. Jones farm and threshed by Carlos Actor. Dave Ridgeway also delivered premium wheat from the Walter Clark farm. Premium wheat requires at least sixty pounds of grain per bushel.

Barns Burned in Severe Wednesday Storm Blackens Two Farms
Lightning struck barns owned by Raymond Willett and Ralph Behmyer near Lees Creek, destroying Willett’s roof and contents including 600 bushels of wheat and hay. Bernard farm tools and 300 bales of hay burned. insurance largely covered losses. Other area barns reportedly lost in the storm.

Boy 6 Injured by Clothes Prop in Home Accident

Elliott Car Figures in Wreck Near Mt. Crab in Rain
The 1947 DeSoto owned by Charles Elliott of near New Vienna was not badly damaged when it side swiped a trailer truck Saturday night near Mt. Crab in heavy rain. Robert Morris, driver, suffered a cut near his eye from hitting a door frame. Dwight Elliott and Bill Crampton, both of Hillsboro, were uninjured. The truck driver was uninjured and the truck was not severely damaged.

The Young Adults Class of Fairview Friends Church gathered Sunday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Jack Kildow near Highland. Lightning Splinters Tree Crashing Into Car Near New Vienna

Layman Bull Wins Grand Ayrshire Prize at Green County Fair
Rob-Lay Preeminent Duane, an Ayrshire bull on the Rob-Lay farm near New Vienna owned by Mr and Mrs Burch Layman, won grand champion at the Green Co Fair in Xenia. The Laymans also earned second place with two heifers in junior and senior yearling classes and another second in the young herd class. Duane will be entered in the Chillicothe and State Fairs the week of August 18.
