Seven firms respond to Grafton blaze investigation

No arrests have been made in Friday's fire at the old Grafton Banking and Trust Building. Authorities are pursuing suspects and remain convinced the incident occurred at 11:23 p.m. Friday as they study the scene and gather evidence.

Fire levels two vacant farmhouses and hits downtown area

Firefighters battled a blaze that leveled two vacant farmhouses in Woodford Addition early Saturday and fought a brush fire in Wendel that scorched five acres Saturday evening. No injuries reported. damage estimates unavailable. Main Street building owner Dr. P. C. Tampoya could not be reached for comment. Firefighters directed water from the rooftop of the Haislip Building and an alley. About 300 people gathered near Taylor County Courthouse as flames rose 20 to 30 feet from the roof. Five residents were evacuated safely. traffic downtown was halted.

Kuwaiti Hijacker Caught After Beirut to Kuwait Flight

Kuwaiti troops in disguise overpowered a Lebanese hijacker in a wheelchair aboard a Middle East Airways Boeing 707 from Beirut to Baghdad. Abu Khaled, 28, demanded 1.5 million dollars, but 112 passengers and 11 crew remained unharmed. He surrendered after negotiations with Lebanese and Iraqi ambassadors and Kuwaiti officials.

Union politics heats up in UMW presidential race

Spokesmen for Arnold Miller and Harry Patrick deny that the bulk of funds for their United Mine Workers presidential campaigns come from non union sources. Carroll Rogers says Patterson's campaign has steelworkers support and says Rauh Jr. endorsements boosted fundraising. Patrick says outside money is limited and Miller notes only a small outside share. Patterson and Rogers debate whether steelworker backing implies a broader merger with the steelworkers union.

Tunnelton Man Killed In Preston County Accident

Allen E. Cline 18 of Tunnelton died Saturday near Marcus when a truck driven by Donald Weaver crossed into an opposite lane to pass a parked vehicle. The 1974 Ford hit a motorcycle, a 1972 Honda, from the opposite direction. No citations issued. Accident will be presented to the June Preston County Grand Jury. Fire, elections, and other local items follow in Kingwood and surrounding areas.
