London reports Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald says war debts must be settled before the upcoming world economic conference. He indicates a parallel debts conference in London with President Roosevelt, while noting that debts remain a hard nut to crack and may influence consensus at the meeting.
The House approved federal regulation of future securities issues, using publicity as the main tool. All interstate offerings must register with the Federal Trade Commission and disclose complete facts, with stock barred from sale until 30 days after registration. A stop order can be issued for misrepresentation or fraud.
Margaret Peggy McMath, 10, was returned alive to her father in Harwichport after a ransom of about $80,000 was paid. Abductors, who held her for nearly three days after snatching her from a schoolroom, promised a 48 hour head start for flight. The exchange occurred aboard a boat owned by William Lee with two Harwichport residents aboard. Coast guard boats intervened just before dusk as authorities moved in to recover the child and bring the money into custody. State police and local officials coordinated the operation and later revealed details of the capture and recovery.
Mary Pickford reportedly vetoes night flying for Douglas Fairbanks after his return from Europe. He planned a Hollywood-bound flight tonight but a telegram from Mrs Mary Pickford Fairbanks halted the plan.
President Roosevelt proposes a federal co ordinator for steam roads reviving discussion of merging the Great Northern and Northern Pacific. The plan would include Burlington & Spokane and Seattle lines with an estimated annual saving of about 10.9 million in normal times.
Professor M. L. Wilson of Montana State College Bozeman will direct curtailment of wheat production and price support under the farm relief bill. Acting on Wallace's instruction he surveys the crop position and moves to set up administrative machinery quickly.
Heavy rain and hail halted the citys twenty-second annual grade school track meet at Clark Park. The delay shifts the program to 10 AM start for preliminaries, noon finish, and finals at 2 PM. Chairman John Lindquist and a 357-contestant field from 27 schools await prompt handling today.
Heavy track and a strong, well matched field heighten Derby intrigue as 22 three year olds enter the field for the 59th Derby in Louisville. Owners Coe and Bradley each submit three entries while potential scratches loom and showers threaten Derby day conditions.
New York May 58 A Dun and Bradstreet review says trade and industry expanded appreciably this week with retail distribution maintaining gains and wholesale buying extending beyond seasonal norms. The report notes nationwide revival in commercial and industrial activity, though the duration is uncertain and consumer purchasing power remains limited.
The body of James McCann about 45 was found last evening curled in a laundry basket in the basement of a local hotel. Coroner Don Murphy announced an inquest will be held. McCann, a longtime resident and World War veteran, died apparently in his sleep about 24 hours before discovery. He was identified by Pat Blake and the coroner. The body rests at the Daly-Shea chapel.
May 5 report from Lewiston states Mrs. Mary E. Peters 23 wife of Thomas Peters of Judith Gap died in a hospital after severe burns from an explosion of kerosene used to start a fire. She was a native of Whitefish.
A letter from Greeley Colorado asks Wyoming Attorney General Ray T. Lee if Wyoming has a prohibition force and whether the writer could obtain work as an undercover man. He asserts he can buy enough evidence in the state to float a battleship and asks for a reply by mail.
Washington May 5 German envoy Dr Hjalmar Schacht promised cooperation in a tariff truce as suggested by the United States. He told reporters that Hitler’s government is democratic noting Hitler first won a popular election then a two thirds Reichstag vote.
Boise, Idaho May 5. State mine inspector W H Simmons notes many new claims staked in Idaho beryllium territory in Lateh and Bonner counties. He cites Boeing airplane company of Seattle reportedly purchasing 700 acres in the heart of the area and says beryllium combined with aluminum creates a stronger yet lighter metal, though extraction is difficult.
Unsettled conditions prevail in Montana this Saturday with showers in the eastern portions. Sunday remains unsettled with little change in temperatures across the region.
Tokyo May 5 Japan has proposed a conference at Tokyo of Japanese Soviet and Manchukuoan delegates to work out solutions for Russo Japanese relations. Topics include the Chinese Eastern railway the frontier clashes and navigation rights on the Sungari river. The Soviet government urges Japan to drop the Manchukuo fiction and negotiate directly with Moscow on the railway.
