Montana job market grim as summer work dwindles

The national recession plus inflation and tight money cut summer job prospects for about 17,300 Montanans. May unemployment rose to 6.2 percent, up 22 percent from last year, with claims up 1,728 and benefits totaling $100,555 in the latest week.

Montana mulls new state prison as reform priority

Helena AP draft notes Montana Board of Institutions to weigh abandoning Deer Lodge prison for a new facility on the prison ranch near Rothe Hall with capacity for 190 inmates. Warden Estelle plans to seek funds from the 1971 legislature, while advocates push rehabilitation and faster construction.

A severe Saturday evening thunderstorm flooded north Butte with 19 inches of moisture and 45 minutes of rain. Basements and homes on Boardman Street filled with water while the Capri Motel and West Pacific Street reported flooding. Many phones out statewide with emergency-only communications and several law enforcement radios on auxiliary power. Washouts closed Brown's Gulch Orofino Gulch and Hail Columbia Gulch roads and trees blocked Highway 91 between Basin and Boulder and damaged a house at 2120 Florence. Streets slick with rocks and debris.

Butte Airport Survey To Assess Capacity And Growth Needs

A HUD team will survey Butte area airport conditions at no local cost. The study, authorized by the Board of County Commissioners after a talk with George D. McCarthy, will inspect the current airport, its capacity, and its location relative to population and industry trends. The effort may cover other sites in the multi county area and could propose a new facility. Estimated cost is $32,000 for experts and expenses.

Bank ownership dispute over offer for city building

The Standard reports a bid of 9000 dollars from State Savings & Realty Corp for the old First Metals Bank building, contingent on the city assuming tax liability. A source clarifies First Metals does not own the property, and State Savings & Realty is the owner behind the offer and tax defaults.

Senator cites 23 percent profit for MPC in utility study

Sen. Swarms of Mice Invade Idaho Burn Area

In northern Idaho the Sun Dance Mountain fire scar of 1967 hosts vast mice infestations. Officials estimate 7000 to 10000 mice per acre feeding on airplane planted seeds and new seedling trees. Foresters warn the deer mouse roams the area, harming saplings and seed beds.

State Bar names leadership for 1971 72 Montana election

William H. Bellingham named state president elect of the Montana Bar Association to lead 1971 72. Edward C. Alexander and Joseph J. McCaffery noted as predecessors as 374 attendees plus guests praised the convention. Resolutions backed indigent legal services through Judicare, federal Health, Education and Welfare agency coverage, and permanent Montana legal services office. Constitutional modernization support urged a November referendum for a constitutional convention.
