U S forces circle enemy in central highlands SB Viet Nam

More than 6000 U S troops including Marines swept the central highlands near Tuy Hoa and Hue in Operation Nathan Hale and Jay, seeking three North Vietnamese battalions. Allied forces reported 395 enemy killed, 19 captured, and 141 weapons seized as air and naval bombardment intensified.

Private juror probe marks start of Penn killing trial

In Athens Georgia questioning of 67 prospective jurors concluded as jurors prepare to choose 12 to try six men charged in the slaying of Lemuel A Penn. The six named defendants linked to the Ku Klux Klan face trial with private questioning to determine bias before selections begin Tuesday morning.

Trustees of School District No. 1 opened two sealed bids for 3 289 000 in general obligation bonds and deferred sale for study. United California Bank offered 4.1289 for 20 years. Pacific front to bring more showers across Montana

A Pacific front is forecast to cross Montana Tuesday bringing increasing clouds and thundershowers. The Weather Bureau expects cooler temperatures and more unsettled weather midweek while Monday saw fair skies and above normal warmth with high readings across the state. Miles City reached 96 while Kalispell Cut Bank and several towns posted 77 to 91. No rainfall reported statewide.

Dodd Denies Misconduct Before Senate Ethics Panel

Senator Thomas J. Dodd faced 32 hours of questioning and firmly denied any misconduct in relation to lobbyist Julius Klein. He blamed aggressive reporting and former staffers for allegations, saying he only hosted German dignitaries and had a personal liking for Klein.

Aleksich Withdraws From County Commissioner Race

Coroner Andy Aleksich pulls out of the Democratic primary for a six year county commissioner term. His family cites his father’s poor health and file an affidavit with Clerk William Duckham. Aleksich, who entered the race May 24, had said he would not seek a third coroner term after a June 5 heart attack and stroke left him in a coma in Missoula. Frank Johns currently runs the office.

Butte Weather Forecast Strong Thunderstorms Through Wednesday

Partly cloudy today with scattered thundershowers this afternoon and evening and continuing through Wednesday. Temperatures little changed with a high near 85 and a low around 48. One year ago in Butte the readings were 64 and 33. Weather chart on page 14.

Young GI Rejoins Viet Nam in Stranger Uniform

David Stucki, a 21 year old who swapped uniforms with a stranded GI, travels from Oakland to Saigon to join the 25th Infantry Division Engineer Battalion. He lacks passport and records, faces consulate delays, and fears possible prison as officials arrange passage home. The experience leaves him both proud and troubled by the loss of his civilian identity.
