Tokyo warns foreign powers as Japanese consulate says operations will begin at noon today. Foreign ships urged to depart Foochow and Wenchow by Thursday noon. Six Americans in Wenchow. Foochow count unknown. No US warships in either port amid Swatow seizure aftermath.
Eastern hard money Republicans join Western silverists to strip the bill of devaluation limits and mandate a Treasury price of 17.57 cents per ounce for western silver. The measure, passed by voice vote, preserves only two years of the international exchange stabilization fund while ending foreign silver purchases.
Two Bureau of Public Roads workers were rescued from a gas-filled 26 foot hole near Tower Falls in Yellowstone Park. Bill L. Nelson, 20, from Gardiner and Vaughn H. Roley, 21, from Denver, were hospitalized at Mammoth Hot Springs and reported recovering._ROLEY was gassed while testing for a bridge foundation east of Tower Junction, and Nelson descended to aid him, becoming overcome himself.
Great Falls June 26 Governor Roy E Ayers announced appointments to two boards created by the last Legislature from his hospital room. J Otis Mudd of Missoula was named to a three year term on the board of food distributors Hans C Hansen of Warden to a two year term and W H Bertsche Jr of Great Falls to a one year term. The state park commission also received a named member M M Duncan of
Fears of a new European crisis grow for late summer or fall as reports surface. In Asia rumors spread that the current crisis there may soon be settled. A British admiralty order to keep the fleet at maximum pace fuels Western tensions.
Albany June 26 The 31st annual governors conference in Albany saw a divide between party camps over New Deal public works spending. Republican Raymond Baldwin argued pump priming competes with private industry while Democrat Herbert Lehman defended cooperation with private enterprise. Lehman, though aligned with Roosevelt on many policies, opposed the Supreme Court reorganization.
Capacity crowds expected for four July performances of Bullion Bandits and Builders. Advance tickets may be exchanged for reserved seats at the Chamber of Commerce today and tomorrow. The Montana pageant, largest of its kind here, features 1 000 cast and staging at the Butte high school stadium.
Names of about 100 organizations signed up to take part in Treasure State Golden Jubilee Fourth of July parade announced by Mrs. Leila Hauswirth. Float decorations committee opened headquarters at 34 West Broadway offering materials and urging early selection to ensure colors and styles.
Washington June 26. The Bureau of Mines plans surveys of Wyoming and Montana mineral deposits under the war materials act. Director John W. Finch said enough promising deposits exist to occupy the exploration group in the first year, including Montana chromite and possible manganese at Philipsburg. Wyoming and other states such as Oregon South Dakota Nevada New Mexico and California are named among known deposits.
Daily letters to the Butte Treasure State Jubilee committee hail the July 1 to 9 celebration. A Business College contest produced Rita Kelley’s official invitation. A sample reply recalls old Butte days with Clark Daly Heinze and rest trips from Helena, praising the town’s enduring character.
Mrs. J. M. Arbur na of San Francisco died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Kalispell. The weekend toll rose to Montana's fourth highway fatality and 56 for the year. The family car skidded on a slick road and overturned. The husband and three children were unhurt. The crash caused two other cars to overturn with no serious injuries.
Four of Montana's 56 counties have complete public health setups. Dr. Kilbourne reports 29 encephalitis deaths in 1938 as the Montana Public Health Association meets at the Finlen hotel in Butte. About 100 register for the day as speakers address the gathering.
The July 4 Standard commemorates 50 years of statehood with answers to questions about 1864 petitioning Congress for statehood three months travel then versus six hours now wheat production exceeding a billion bushels and the first tourist in 1854. Extra copies are 5 cents each, mailed copies 10 cents.
Senator Wheeler of Montana, chair of the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee, opposed three parts of the President's $3.86 billion lending program including railroad equipment purchases, loans to Central and South American nations, and self liquidating toll highways. He insisted prosperity requires solving farm and unemployment issues permanently.
Robert A. Smith, 20, held in county jail after return from Helena where he was brought from St. Louis. He is charged with murder in the October 20 Butte hotel killing of Ramsay salesman Knight C Wickiter. County Attorney W. E. Coyle says the case may be tried in December or January. Undersheriff George McKenzie and Deputy Frank Sweeney aided in the arrest.
A Senate appropriations sub committee approved the administration relief bill of 1.735 billion dollars after striking out 125 million dollars in WPA public works funds. The panel also eliminated a House provision to replace the WPA administrator with a bipartisan three man board.
Partly cloudy conditions expected in Montana for Tuesday and Wednesday. A warm spell reaches the northwest portion Tuesday.
New York June 26 The Senate vote against extending the President authority to devalue the dollar was hailed by bankers as a sign of a trend away from money tinkering. Winthrop W Aldrich head of Chase National said ending devaluation powers would restore sound money policies. Wall Street paged the vote as possibly inconsequential to markets.
The House passed a bill by Rep Murdock to extend the start date for annual assessment work on mining claims from July 1 to October 1 for the 1939 fiscal year. An identical Senate bill was introduced. under existing laws claimants forfeit patents if $100 is not spent annually on improvements. A moratorium on the work has been in effect for several years.
Senator Hatch urged Democrats and Republicans to back his bill restricting political activity by federal employees. He said the measure would curb abuses and hopes for strong cross party support to become law, warning that defeat would place responsibility on responsible persons.
