President Nixon spoke to about 14 000 Jaycees in St Louis urging Americans to stand up and speak about what is right about America. He argued that what is right about the nation enables us to correct those who would harm its freedoms and institutions.
Butte City Council met in closed session Thursday night to discuss purchasing the First Metals Bank building or the Great Northern railroad station. Attending were representatives from both owners. City Hall remains a concern as inspector Frank Harkness warned it is out of plumb and repairs would be costly.
Riders from Montana and Idaho start the season Sunday at the Butte Motorcycle Club plant near Butte with scramble races and time trials. The event includes public facilities, PA system, and concessions. Also on Sunday a state outdoor pistol competition draws contestants and spectators.
Fortney H. Stark Jr. heads Security National Bank with 40,000 customers and promotes cashing U.S. savings bonds for reinvestment. He posts antiwar posters in his offices and has mailed directives to depositors. The Treasury canceled Security National's permit to sell following his messaging.
In May 1963 Stark, born in Milwaukee, and nine others formed Security National with 1 million capital and one Walnut Creek office. The group expanded to 70 million in assets and five banking offices. Stark defends his antiwar stance amid protests by letters and anonymous calls, insisting he is the controlling stockholder and that opposing counsel can help, while noting yes men are poor advisors.
A weather map on page 5 shows fair to partly cloudy conditions through Saturday with isolated thunderstorms possible across the region. No significant precipitation expected beyond scattered storms in some areas.
Montana lawyers and a mix of federal and district judges opened the 82nd Montana Bar Association convention with a day of talks on everyday professional issues. Notable speakers included Justice Frank I Haswell on judges in Montana and Chief Justice James T Harrison’s absence noted for Saturday.
A government study finds American men and women heavier on average, with fatter arms among men and larger triceps skinfolds in women. New data from 6,672 adults aged 18 to 79 compares Americans with Italians in Rome and Canadians, noting limited international waistline figures.
Five elementary schools in Butte were crowded and three at maximum capacity per a summary of 18 buildings from a February 17 physical needs survey by School District 1. The report notes teacher pupil ratios, room usage, and imminent study results to be explored at the University of Montana.
