Farmers in 23 of 36 states voting in an Agriculture Department referendum approved continuing marketing quotas on wheat for next year. Returns showed 104,533 votes for quotas and 49,382 against, signaling a favorable margin.
Montana wheat farmers voted 13,409 yes to 1,937 no in 55 of 56 counties to approve marketing quotas for the 1956 crop. The measure carried 82.9 percent overall with Roosevelt county the lone county unreported. Officials noted many challenged ballots likely valid and counted, and that results may be delayed due to vote challenges.
In Washington the Soviet foreign minister told Secretary Dulles he is willing to pay 50 percent of the damages for the shot down Neptune plane near St Lawrence Island Alaska. Dulles said the offer falls short of U S demands. The meeting occurred at the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco as Eisenhower was at Lake Parmachenee Maine.
The Associated Press reports Montana wheatgrowers voted on Saturday on continuing federal controls as part of a nationwide referendum. They chose between marketing quotas with a 55 million acre national allotment and parity price, or a plan with no quotas but acreage restrictions and a 50 percent parity price.
HELENA Montana officials debated the legality of the 1955 Land Reclassification Law but stated it will not halt current plans. J F Reid chairman of the Board of Equalization said meetings with county officials will proceed under both new and old law.

Sparks asked to be told to American authorities of his location and his mother in Tennille expressed joy at the news. The Army says Sparks faced a general court martial for AWOL robbery and assault at the time.

The U S Army marked the fifth anniversary of the Korean War by returning the port of Pusan to South Korea. It deactivated its rear area supply zone as the Republic of Korea assumed front line supply duties. Pusan, a wartime hub, handled over 30 million tons of cargo and 3.3 million men.
President Eisenhower visited Parmachenee Lake Maine for a weekend of fishing after prompting speculation about his 1956 plans. Settlement of six weeks of negotiations between The Anaconda Company and the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers hinges on union leaders approving the final offer of a 10 cent hourly wage increase. The company said the offer, valid until 3:30 P.M. Butte daylight time on Monday, June 27, would raise the wage scale by 80 cents per day and take effect July 1, 1955.
City police and traffic committees will discuss a scrambled traffic system used in many large cities. At busy intersections such as Broadway and Main pedestrians would use present or diagonal walk lanes while motor traffic stops. The plan includes a simultaneous red light in all directions and a Walk sign, resuming with Don’t Walk. The panel will also consider making Mercury street a through route and starting work on a new eight hour meter parking area in Mercury alley to aid uptown workers.
