North Korean troops invade South Korea at dawn on a wide front but U S advisers say the assault is largely halted by Saturday afternoon. Heavy artillery and tank attacks continue with reports of Kaesong partly occupied and Onjin peninsula evacuees as U S units observe from Seoul.
A Northwest DC-4 airliner with 58 aboard vanished on a New York to Minneapolis flight and was presumed to have plunged into stormy Lake Michigan near Milwaukee. The worst air disaster in Great Lakes history triggered the largest search, with fog hampering efforts as helicopters and ships scoured waters 3 to 10 miles offshore before nightfall.
Richard W. Thomson 35 of Butte is among 58 aboard a Northwest Airlines plane that crashed in Lake Michigan during a storm en route from New York to Montana. He was visiting his parents, Dr. and Mrs. F A Thomson, and had a World War II service record as a major in the Army transport corps. Relatives gathered as search efforts, including the ice breaker Mackinaw and air units, combed a 60 by 170 mile offshore area with Coast Guard, Navy and Air Forces coordinating.
Dr Harold C Urey Nobel chemist and MSU alum arrives in Montana to address engineers in Butte. A 6:30 dinner at Finlen hotel precedes his 8:30 p m talk in the Montana School of Mines auditorium on The Political Consequences of the Atomic Age. He lectures across Bozeman Helena Missoula this week with organizers led by the Montana Society of Engineers and state institutions.
Senator Owen Brewster opened a two day eastern seaboard GOP meeting in Atlantic City on June 24 1950 declaring peace the key issue for November elections. He and Gabrielson urged unity among the national and campaign committees noting public unrest and the need to show bipartisan resolve against a perceived cold war.
Senator Morse of Oregon on June 24 criticized congressional investigations, including the McCarthy Communist-in-government inquiry, saying they are conducted largely on a kangaroo court basis.
Federal inspector Andrew C. Warming declared the Silver Bow county jail a disgrace after a visit noting obsolete equipment, poor refrigeration, inadequate cooking facilities, and very poor maintenance. He warned the jail could be a fire trap and urged improvements, echoing a prior report.
Five year old Sharon O Neil of Livingston remained unconscious with a skull fracture and jaw injuries after being struck by Audrey Ann Bailey an 18 year old driver fined ten dollars for driving without a license authorities found no evidence of criminal negligence and no further charges filed Bailey said she did not see the child in time Park County Attorney George J Allen announced the findings and the investigation concluded Saturday night
Paris reports the national assembly rejected a vote of confidence 352 to 230 as Premier Georges Bidault and his cabinet resigned amid delicate Indo China and Schuman plan negotiations. The eight month government faced criticism over salary increases for government employees and warned of stabilizing prices and currency.
Speeches are set for the July 2 homecoming picnic at Columbia Gardens as part of Butte's week long Fourth of July celebration. E S McGlone Tim Sullivan Claude Saunders and John Clark will speak. The event precedes a busy nine day program with a major Fourth parade planned and committee meetings to finalize details.
The $995,000 Butte project advances on schedule as 501 pilings 23 to 25 feet long are driven and pressure treated. A new 48 inch sewer line 431 feet long and storm and water lines have been installed. Footing forms will arrive next week and concrete pours to follow with 35 workers on site, rising as above ground work starts. The site is at 1200 Harrison Avenue near Marrison tennis courts and seating will reach 4,762 for basketball events.
Willis Smith won North Carolina's Democratic senatorial nomination, defeating Senator Frank Graham, a Truman ally, after a bitter campaign that framed issues around Negroes Communism and Truman. Graham conceded as Smith led by about 25 000 votes with most returns counted. Unofficial returns show Smith 275 139 Graham 254 359.
Butte region shows cloudy to partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures with showers on Sunday. Sunday morning low around 38 and Sunday afternoon high near 63. Minor readings at School of Mines and Airport noted. Montana west of Divide and east of Divide expect similar cool, partly cloudy conditions with scattered showers and highs 55 to 65.

Silver Bow county shows a surge in welfare aid for dependent children from 398 in March 1946 to 695 in March 1950. Average monthly payments rose from 65.80 to 94.23 dollars, making the county’s ADC budget the highest in Montana at 52,000 dollars. Expenditures were 33,490 dollars in 1946. Utah report notes that on Friday night a jury convicted 43 year old Joe Garcia Trujillo of first degree murder for the slaying of Max Lopez on May 26, 1948. The verdict follows the investigation and trial proceedings at the local court.
Four western railroads ordered wholesale train cancellations in anticipation of a switchmen strike at 6 am Sunday. Only Great Northern plans to operate. others shut down for the strike. Embargoes and delays set, with routes from Chicago to the Pacific affected.
Arthur R. Jackson of Sheridan Montana and his bride Geraldine Reilly of Hartford Connecticut were passengers on the missing Northwest DC-4 liner that went down in Lake Michigan late Saturday night. Jackson, a Chase National Bank employee in New York City and Yale graduate, was en route to Sheridan for a belated honeymoon with his wife. His parents, longtime Sheridan residents, were distressed by the tragedy and the family noted a brother in New York.
