Deer Lodge Man Dies in Wreck
John A. Salois, 23, of Deer Lodge and Garrison, died late Tuesday night when his car skidded, crashed into a barrow pit beside the highway, and overturned several times. Richard Moore, 25, also of Deer Lodge, was injured and treated at St Joseph Hospital. Moore was said to be not seriously hurt and up and around. The fatality marked the 91st highway death in the state for the year according to Powell County Coroner R. J. Beck.

Jail escapees pull hole in Powell County Jail wall
Deer Lodge authorities intensified a search for two inmates Ray mond Strike 21 of Harlowton and Bert Triplett of Hamilton who tunneled under a wall opening on Cottonwood avenue to escape the 82 year old Powell County Jail before midnight Tuesday. Strike, held on a break from State Prison at Deer Lodge June 17 1954, was recaptured last August and has served two terms for crimes including obtaining money by bad checks and grand larceny. Triplett is serving 60 days for petty larceny and faces burglary suspicions in Ravalli county. The pair may have fled in a stolen Jeep station wagon. their direction is unknown.
