Paris report says Belgium and the Netherlands object to ceding sovereignty to a supranational body. They demand more detail on coal and steel pooling before treaty signing. France outlines a high authority while Germany Italy and Luxembourg show cautious neutrality at the conference.
At the Enka corporation plant in Morristown Tennessee four workers were wounded four shot and a man critically injured after a strike outbreak tied to CIO Textile Workers union Local 1054. State highway patrol arrested and fingerprinted 65 men identified as strikers while three nonstriking workers were injured attempting to enter the plant. East Tennessee guards were alerted but not deployed.
A quake rattled Aquisili and nearby areas in Ecuador on June 22, collapsing a house and killing an elderly woman and a child. Telegraph reports cited cracks in buildings across Latachunga Ujili and fear in Amboto Puji lo Salcedo Lasso and Saquisli while Quito and Guayaquil felt the moderate tremor. No damage reported in Quito.
Pittsburgh June 22 A 14 day milk strike that halted deliveries to 3 000 000 households appeared close to a settlement as the AFL milk drivers union scheduled a Friday meeting to vote on a two cent wage proposal.
Search planes located two life rafts from a B 29 Superfortress that crashed about 140 miles southeast of Guam. The crew of 11 was believed aboard the rafts after the bomber ditched at 2 30 a m Friday local time following a 18 hour flight from Okinawa. Distress signals were received by Far East Air Force headquarters from multiple points. The aircraft was en route to Guam after a practice bombing run on Okinawa, announced by the 19th Bombardment Wing on Guam.
Four Engined Navy Air experimental plane crashes eight miles south of Bedford near the Paterson Mine rock quarry. Witnesses describe wreckage across an acre and bodies scattered in brush. Coroner cites at least three dead with potential for four or five. one victim identified as a sailor.
Washington June 22 A Senate investigator said testimony indicated John S Service State department official shared secret military information with Philip Jaffe Amerasia editor. Service denied knowingly passing data. FBI microphone claims and Roosevelt to Chiang messages discussed at public hearing.
French occupation authorities disclosed that defense fortifications are being built in western Europe, apparently to deter a Russian attack. The communique notes measures below the Lorelei on the Rhine are part of allied, preventive passive defense, not dangerous to the population, and involve France and other western European countries.

In La Paz Bolivia on June 22 rumors of a military revolutionary plot persisted despite official denials. Government minister Jorge Rodriguez and police director general Isaac Civenti said no subversive activities were found even as troop movements were reported with two army regiments quartered at Viacha and Guaqui near La Paz.

A 10 year old girl in Omaha gave birth to a healthy baby boy at a local hospital. Doctors called the birth completely normal and the infant weighed six pounds eight ounces. Three young residents of Butte were taken into protective custody after wandering with a loaded .22 rifle and firing into two South side homes. A 9 year old girl admitted firing two shots. she and siblings aged 6 and about 14 were in custody as parents could not be located. No injuries were reported as bullets shattered a kitchen window and lodged in an exterior wall.
Limited authority gives the president power to order inductions only in emergencies when Congress is out of session. A Senate House conference must resolve differences within 15 days as the draft law is extended for three years. Thousands face potential mobilization if war arises.
The U.S. grand jury in Los Angeles indicted Dr. Sidney Weinbaum, a 52 year old Caltech jet propulsion lab scientist, on eight counts of perjury and fraud for denying Communist party membership in Army review board questions. Judge James M. Carter oversaw the proceeding after earlier questioning of Dr. Jacob W. Dubnoff, a Caltech biochemistry researcher.
