Cloudburst floods in Colorado City and Snyder drown a man, wash out railroad and highway bridges, and displace hundreds of residents. A Texas and Pacific passenger train halted as water swelled under a trestle while cotton bales and debris battered bridge pilings. Snyder and Colorado City, near 250 miles west of Dallas, report widespread damage and dozens of families left homeless.
Japanese forces landing at dawn seized Swatow on the southeast China coast. About 40 Americans and several hundred Britons were in the city, along with the U S destroyer Pillsbury. Foreign ships were warned off as the invasion moved inland amid vague fighting reports.

Washington June 20 Senate commerce committee approved and sent to the Senate a bill authorizing 407 855 600 for waterways flood control power development and related projects in 41 states The measure covers 127 projects and compares with higher House totals Proponents expect Senate passage citing broad state benefits and a six project power package with peak output about 405 160 kilowatts versus Bonneville capacity
The Exchange club conference opens in Butte on Saturday June 24 for a two day session attended by members from Missoula Helena and Great Falls and by guests from Idaho and Utah. Colin Christie Joseph Helms Doctor Hale and others reported at the New Finlen Luncheon. Copper souvenirs and mementoes will be distributed to guests. The program outlined by Mr Hermes details Idaho and Utah attendees arriving on Saturday.
Brown haired actress Tallulah Bankhead urged the Senate committee to preserve WPA theater projects and warned that many actors would be destitute if relief funds for the arts were cut. Senator Wagner and colleagues proposed reserving up to 3 percent of relief funds for WPA only projects to sustain theater and arts.
Heavy rainfall across the region soaks forest land and cuts fire danger readings to the lowest marks in the U S Forest Service system. Charles A Joy says stations at Carlson ranch and West Fork ranger, plus planned Cable and Haystack stations, supply daily reports on precipitation and fuels to determine the danger level.

The Kwangs, now in the United States after Cornell PhD studies, hope the lullabies and message reach their child. The station broadcasts internationally on 9530 kilocycles.
In Helena a farmhand was held for investigation in the 1936 Tacoma kidnapping and slaying of Charles Mattson. The man resembled the known kidnapper and claimed to be in Tacoma at the time. FBI agent W Guy Bannister left Butte after questioning. photos were to be sent to the Mattson family for identification. The suspect may be released before the check is finished.
City officials announce decorating for the Treasure State Jubilee will start today or tomorrow with flags bunting and streamers in national colors on principal business streets. Building owners are urged to decorate as well. Harry W. Lewis decorator representative K C Caperton has headquarters at 34 West Broadway. Decorating will begin by Friday with building work to follow.
About 200 ministerial and lay delegates gathered in Missoula for the opening sessions of the Montana Methodists annual conference. Bishop Wilbur E. Hammaker of Denver delivered the opening sermon and the meeting is scheduled to end Sunday.
Montana forecast calls for unsettled conditions with local thundershowers on Wednesday and Thursday and little change in temperature.
