Mrs Shields Elected at Billings Meet

Mrs H V Gibson of Great Falls was installed president of the women's auxiliary of the Montana State Medical association at Billings. Mrs M G Danskin of Glendive was named president elect for 1949 50. Officers chosen include Mrs J C Shields of Butte first vice president and other officers from Kalispell Billings Great Falls Miles City Helena. Present directors serve through next year.

Postal Workers Open Parley in Helena Gathering

The Montana postal workers convention opens in Helena with both clerks and carriers preparing to meet. More than 200 delegates expected as registration runs until noon and sessions proceed with talks, a banquet, and an evening dance after a joint assembly. Delegates from Helena, Butte, Great Falls and other cities attend. Local officers Milton Mitchke, Dick Trott, John Sheehan, Myron Girnold, James Harris and John Eranks preside or participate.

Beet Growers Weigh Higher Sugar Prices Proposal

One Nations Beet Growers federation debated raising sugar prices to improve beet profits. A spokesman blamed Department of Agriculture overestimation of consumption for hurting prices. J E Bowen of Burley Idaho, federation president, expected a policy statement at its two day conference. Representatives from 17 growers associations across nine western states discussed marketing, growing and labor.

Eastern Star Meeting Hosted by Mme Palma Coon Visit

A large turnout attended the OES Thursday meeting in Deer Lodge with Mme Palma Coon, grand worthy matron from Billings, delivering an official visitation and speaking on Build a Better World Today. Out of town guests were present, and a supper followed the ritual session as plans were announced for June 23 hospitality and the July 11 Masonic home pie sale.

Committee Names Deer Lodge Members to Serve

In DEER LODGE on June 18 the Daughters of the Mile Tirgah temple in Butte appointed Mrs. Noel H. Boyer and Mrs. Lea McElwain to the grand deer committee. Members urged to report illness or distress so assistance or comfort can be arranged through the committee workers.

Montanans Ready to Flee Floods

Floods prompted mass evacuation plans in Montana as rapid washouts and rising rivers affected highways from Blackfoot to Dupuyer. High water damaged power plants near Shelby and threatening dam structures near Glacier Park station, forcing residents to consider relocation with many homes and basements inundated. Forecasters predict little rain in coming days, easing chances of further flash floods.

Compromise plan on draft stalls Senate talkathon

A filibuster marathon in the Senate persisted as leaders tried to bridge House and Senate draft bills. Speaker Taft urged continuation until morning while talks with a Republican opposition group sought a tentative 50 day induc tion window post passage. The House bill passed 283 to 120 to delay inductions to February 1949, while a state bill earlier favored a two year draft.

Katherine Mahard Taken by Death in Butte Ireland Native

Katherine Mahard 18 a native of Ireland and longtime Butte resident died Thursday evening at a local hospital after an illness. Her home was 44 West Broadway. Survived by a nephew Frank Van Buren of Missoula. Remains at Sherman and Reed funeral home awaiting funeral arrangements.

Baseball Commissioner Role and Club Meeting Noted

Dewey and Taft Claim Delegates in Primary Feud

Dewey, Taft and Stassen camps report gains after early rounds as each side claims new delegates. Dewey’s manager says 25 more delegates, from three states, while Taft insists 30 to 60 additional votes may come from unexpected sources. Stassen adds four delegates, per his camp. French Riots: 100 Arrested as Students Clash with Police

In Paris five hundred university students clashed with police on the Champs Elysees to mark the end of exams. More than 100 were arrested as ink bottles flew and police clubs swung. Demonstrators voiced sympathy for strikers at Clermont Ferrand Frazee while attempting to reach the Arc de Triomphe.
