President Nixon travels from Salzburg to Cairo to begin a seven day Middle East swing with Henry Kissinger by his side amid controversy over a wiretap. Nixon and Kissinger say the issue will be resolved and Kissinger will not resign.
The Model City agency board opposes downgrading Montana Tech to a community college and transferring engineering programs to Montana State University. The Local Development Corp. plans a study proposal to help Tech retain its educational levels and attract a share of $566,000, with Butte set to receive $190,000.
City detective Joe Keller said three men in a small car attempted an armed robbery at Bob's Pen 401 South Montana Tuesday around 7:45 p m They entered the store waving pistols but fled after two minutes when the getaway car left Engar the owner and a woman clerk escaped through a rear door and alerted police.
Local 400 of the Operating Engineers and the Montana Contractors Association announced a tentative contract settlement as the highway construction standoff nears resumption. About 1,800 heavy equipment operators are represented by Local 400, with ratification awaiting union members. Other unions had already struck May 1, halting road work statewide.
Joseph Ellefson 26 of Glasgow died after his bicycle struck a moving car at an intersection Monday night. Birla Gertierrez about 25 of Everett Washington died when her car left the highway and overturned about 10 miles east of Garrison on U S 12 Monday night. Montana’s 1974 traffic fatality toll reached 93, down from 117 a year earlier.
Henry Kissinger faced questions in Austria about his ties to Washington. A White House spokesman said Nixon would be reluctant to accept a resignation, as aides indicated a news conference aimed to clear the air. The president’s aides denied involvement in administration leak efforts.
Kissinger, at a guest house news conference, warned he would resign if the Senate Foreign Relations Committee does not reexamine his nomination and testimony. He urged the panel to recheck last September testimony as Nixon aide Ronald L. Ziegler said the President hopes to clear Kissinger’s name.

Judge, Mansfield urges a new vigorous program for the School of Mines, citing Techs high standards and global metals industry reputation.
Norman A. Huey, an EPA regional official, questioned the ASARCO proposal to relax Montana sulfur-oxide limits as the Board of Health debated a variance petition. The hearing recessed to July 11 for comments on a 40 month timetable to cut emissions by 75 percent at East Helena smelters and to review federal standards due by July 31, 1977.
The Montana Mining Association unanimously rejects moving Montana Tech to a community college and transferring mining and petroleum engineering to Montana State University. Members warn the change could erode mining courses while urging expansion of Montana Tech. Koehler Stout of Butte is elected president with Herb Sherburne, Don Lawson, and Louise Shafer as officers.
Montana Consumer Counsel seeks to intervene for Philipsburg residents in a Burlington Northern Railway dispute with the Public Service Commission over a Anaconda to Philipsburg trucking certificate. Geoffrey Brazier says merger led BN to discard routes and a transfer was approved without a full hearing. A June 24 hearing date is set in Helena with Granite County Attorney assisting.
