Pilots Urged to Watch for Missing Plane in Montana

Helena June 9 The Montana Aeronautics Commission asks area pilots to renew lookout for two missing state National Guard members. Col William B Sperry 39 commander of the Guard Air Squadron and Agt Charles Glover disappeared in a snowstorm last Sept 16 after attempting to land an attack bomber from Great Falls. Wiley says no organized search now but any leads will be followed.

Montana freight rates boosted by state commission

Helena June 9 the Montana Railroad Commission authorized a raise in intrastate commodity freight rates replacing 20 percent charges with a 6 to 10 percent increase effective July 1 livestock and sugar rations were exempt shippers will notice the difference on bills the commission said the rise mirrors interstate rates and is meant to cover higher operating costs railroads cite revenue needs from 1947 to 1948 adjustments

Montana Gas Tax Receipts Rise in Five Months

Montana netted 2,643,073 dollars from the state gasoline tax in the first five months of the year, up 12 percent from the 1947 period. Five-month collections totaled 9,111,850 with refunds of 468,878. the same period last year showed 2,817,284 in receipts and 497,967 in refunds, according to Chairman Bam Goza of the state equalization board.

Road Reconstruction Favored in State Program

ELENA JUNG reports the MoT said three fourths of road work is reconstruction. The program totals about 18.5 million dollars with 14.2 million for reconstruction and 4.7 million for new construction. Ninety three projects are reconstruction and 26 are new.

Helena June 9. Thirteen Montana graduates were admitted to practice by the Montana Supreme Court. Judge Pray Disposes of Seven Actions

Judge Charles N. Pray of Great Falls disposed of seven cases opening a federal term. Sentences ranged from two years and four months to eight months with probation five years, some defendants deported. One case deferred sentence. another involved transporting a stolen car. Proceedings included pleas by Nall Gudz Strakowski Thomastreet and Thompson. and Morris facing a separate plea. Helen Keller listed as attorney for Fae ris with sale of wine to Indians. Thursday set for Morris plea.

Rivers in Montana Recede as Yellowstone Peaks

Montana rivers mostly retreat with the Yellowstone near its peak after heavy rain. Missouri and tributaries fall slowly after flooding 65 towns near Great Falls evacuated. High Court Rules for Livingston in Dismissal Action

The Montana Supreme Court in Helena affirmed a Livingston city motion to dismiss an appeal by Georges W. Adkins and others who sought to halt creation of a special improvement district and its levied assessments. The city council agreed to a 56 478.25 payment for the improvements, potentially tripling the $150 per lot in the original plan. The ruling notes the decision does not end consideration of the district’s validity in other suits. Associate Justice I W Choate wrote the opinion. Injured MP Tucker Reported In Good Condition

Corp Murrell Tucker of a Great Falls Air Base detachment guarding the Truma event at Naranche stadium fell from the Unique Cleaning building roof. He suffered a severe laceration to the left eye and injuries to left leg and arm but was listed in good condition after hospital admission. A presidential party representative inquired about his status for President Truman.

Middleton Seeks Montana Office

Helena Jane Astin Middleton of Her Lodge filed late Wednesday as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for state railroad and public service commissioner. A former chairman of the commission, Middleton is a well known Montana rancher from Deer Lodge. He previously served 17 years as warden at Deer Lodge state penitentiary and held sheriff roles in Custer County before aligning with Gov. Holt era Montana politics. He and wife reside in Deer Lodge with a son Lt. Blu Middleton in the Marines stationed at Guam and two daughters.

Treasury to drop simplified tax return form

The Treasury will abolish the Simplified withholding form known as W-2 after this year. The long familiar W-2 is the year end payroll record showing salary and withheld tax. A revised 1040 form will replace it, merging useful W-2 features and removing its defects.

Bourquin Files for Republican Attorney General Nomination

Butte attorney and former Silver Bow county prosecutor Justin Bourquin filed a nominating petition in Helena seeking the Republican nomination for Montana attorney general. Murphy Finance company offices at 225 Harbour Building were burglarized early Wednesday. Drawers and files were opened, petty cash left with $25 missing, and intruders pried the door lock while failing to move the steel door. Police Del Rodda and Join O’Leary led the investigation.
