Cease-fire deadline clash at UN over Middle East crisis

The UN Security Council pushed a 4 pm EDT cease-fire deadline but balked at a UN peace-keeping role. Israel said Arab states had not declared a halt, while the Soviets backed Iraq and Syria and pressed for immediate acceptance by all sides. The Council adjourned without voting on enforcement measures.

Israel Breaks Gulf Blockade Seizes Sharm el Sheikh

Israeli forces seized Sharm el Sheikh and broke the Gulf of Aqaba blockade while claiming a Sinai victory. Dayan vowed permanent peace and Jerusalem remains in Israeli hands as the war shifts. Ismailia fell and Rabin said the Egyptian army was crushed. Jordan’s Amman saw clashes amid regional upheaval with Lebanon severing U S relations and mass evacuations underway.

United Nations reports Israel informed the UN that a cease-fire with Jordan is in effect on Wednesday night. The statement did not indicate any halt to hostilities with other Arab states.

Speculator Mine Fire Crowned Butte’s Worst Disaster

June 9 1917 morning papers carried a two column headline on Big Fire Rages in Speculator. The afternoon edition detailed the tragedy as one of the worst metal mine disasters in history. Residents learned of the fire’s full scale and dire casualties.

U S planes raid Kep MIG base and nearby SAM site

U.S. aircraft from the carriers Constellation and Enterprise bombed the Kep MIG interceptor base 37 miles northeast of Hanoi and a SAM site 50 miles southwest of Hanoi. Pilots reported destroying or damaging several MIGs and hitting runway revetments. In separate fighting near the DMZ, 19 Marines were killed and 40 wounded as U.S. Marines counterattacked North Vietnamese forces, with 67 enemy killed and a Marine company routed on Hill 881.

Mine-Mill and Anaconda Co meet to negotiate

Butte Miners Union No 1 and Anaconda Co plan initial talks on a new labor contract for June 15 16. Union president John Glase said the company requested the meetings, as the current contract expires June 30. Glase returned from Denver where a 28 member Nonferrous conference committee of United Steelworkers and the new International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Work met and adopted a unanimous resolution.

Anaconda School Bond Election Results Reported

Anaconda district 10 election authorized a 164 820 dollar levy for school operation and maintenance from July 1 1967 to July 1 1968. The measure passed 681 to 433 with 23 percent turnout of 4 795 qualified voters. Swanson noted 1 116 votes cast and one voided ballot.

Butte Captain Dies in Vietnam War Action

Capt Ronald Gregory Babich 28 of the U S Marines was killed in action near Quang Tin Vietnam a Defense Department report said He was the third Butte resident to die in the war following Daniel J Janhunen who drowned September 2 1966 and Weston H Reece killed January 13 1967 Babich a Butte High School graduate earned a forestry degree from the University of Montana in 1960 He married Sharon Flynn in 1957 and left the university to join the Marine Corps He received the Purple Heart January 13 for combat injuries He is survived by his widow two sons a daughter a sister and two brothers Burial services are pending in Missoula.

New Recreation Head Bob Rowling Selected by City

Bob Rowling, 25, a fifth grade teacher at McKinley School, was approved by the City Council as director of the City Recreation Department succeeding Don Peoples. Peoples resigns April 5 to become athletics director at Butte Central High School but will assist during the transition. Rowling and his family reside at 315 S. Jackson. he is a 1960 Butte High School graduate.

U S marshal representatives in Montana pursued seven indicted individuals named in a federal grand jury action returned late Tuesday in Butte. Names were withheld pending apprehension as authorities continued pages of coverage.

Montana Flood Threat Returns As Heavy Rain Fells

Imminent flood threats returned as heavy rains drenched Montana. Ten inches fell in 24 hours in Petroleum County and adjacent areas, pushing rivers over banks. Flat Willow Creek flooded south of Winnett. Musselshell tributaries rose, with the Musselshell near Ryegate Lavina Mosby and Ft. Peck Reservoir rising rapidly. Canyon Ferry Reservoir gains about a foot daily while Sun River and Missouri drainage show rising levels. Coalwood recorded a record 7.65 inches. hail piled six inches in wheat country. Roads and bridges closed temporarily in Lewistown Ekalaka Forsyth. Beartooth Highway closed. Milwaukee tracks washed out near Lavina. rail service aimed to resume by afternoon.
