Beartooth Highway Closes On Drifted Snow Across Montana

Drifting and blowing snow forced the closure of U S Highway 212 from Red Lodge Montana to the northeast gateway of Yellowstone National Park. Beartooth Highway was also shut by snow and will reopen for the season later. Park officials and the Montana Highway Department announced the closure, noting drifts up to 20 feet and seasonal limits.

Hurricane Alma heads toward Cuba

Hurricane Alma gathered strength with 95 mph winds and shifted east toward southern Cuba. The Cuban Weather Bureau extended the emergency zone toward Cienfuegos while U S officials reported winds up to 60 mph near Isle of Pines. Aleksich In Critical Condition After Medical Crisis

Coroner Andy Aleksich remained in critical condition Tuesday night at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula after a heart attack and stroke earlier in the day. He was transferred from a Butte hospital Sunday in critical condition. hospital officials reported no change in his status.

Children's Day marks summer start in Butte with weekly rides

Butte kicks off summer with Children's Day at Columbia Gardens. Each Thursday during summer, free transport is provided between the city and the recreation area for children under 14, with special buses from the Woolworth Store at 9 am and every 15 minutes until 4 15 pm. Regular city buses handle return trips with transfers available. Supplementing the service, five regular transit buses cover multiple city districts on a 30 minute to hourly schedule. Supervisors will supervise at the Gardens.

Butte Soldier Wounded in Viet Nam Doing Okay

Army 1st Lt. Ed DeGeorge 24 of Butte is reported to be recovering in Fitzsimmons Hospital Denver after being wounded April 28 by a sniper near the Cambodian border. He has time left in the hospital but is expected to be all right, his parents say.
