Old Vegas Club Leveled by Fire in Meaderville

A vacant one story frame building housing the Vegas Club burned to the ground after being spotted late Friday night. Meaderville and McQueen volunteer firemen responded at 11 30 p m but could not stop the blaze. Two adjoining vacant structures were set ablaze but were controlled early Saturday. The owner was Dan Stefani and the club had been leased to the Vegas Club.

Billings Man Named To Top ACT Office In Montana

Oscar Barfield of Billings was elected grand counselor of the Montana Idaho Utah jurisdiction of United Commercial Travelers succeeding Harold P. Price of Butte. The con vention opened Wednesday as the tristate unit with over 6,000 members named A P Smartt George Page and others to senior roles. Barfield is married with son Lee in Houston and has held all chairs in Billings and tristate councils.

Kennedy plans UK talk as Western alliance faces issues

President Kennedy announced a June 29 to 30 meeting with Prime Minister Macmillan to discuss Western alliance problems. In Lexington North Carolina a large force of 125 state troopers restored calm after two nights of rioting that left Fred Link dead and Art Richardson wounded. Police jailed seven Negroes and two whites and served 28 warrants as Mayor C V Link declared a state of emergency.

Two Hot Springs Men Killed in Montana Truck Crash

A pickup loaded with wood crashed six miles west of Elmo on Montana 28, killing two Hot Springs residents, driver Paul E. Leistner 74 and Ingvold Twedt. The truck left the road and nosedived into a rock bank, trapping both men. A tanker driver arrived first. an inquest was not yet decided. The toll raised Montana’s 1963 traffic deaths to 96. Leistner's widow and son August survive. Twedt had no survivors.

Storms Rip Midwest Killing 10-Year-Old in Ohio

Killer thunderstorms lashed the heat soaked Midwest with tornadoes and winds up to 71 miles an hour. In Cincinnati Glenn Frost 10 died when a lightning struck the tree sheltering him and three companions was hurt others. A light plane overturned at Lunken airport and an 18 year old University of Wisconsin coed Dell Abramson vanished presumed drowned after a sailboat capsize on Lake Mendota Madison Wisconsin.

Nine hospitalized in Butte crash at Marcia and Massachusetts

A two car collision early Saturday at Marcia and Massachusetts sent five young Butte residents to St. James Community Hospital. Drivers were Neil Gray, 17, of 2501 Princeton and Sherry Coughlin, 27, of 2840 St. Ann. Passengers included David McKiernan, 15, of 2505 Harvard, John Victor Corra, 16, of 2214 Princeton, and Dorothy Ygnatowitz, sister of Mrs. Coughlin. Both cars were demolished. All victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Montana hearing weighs Knowles Dam project viability

Witnesses testifying before the committee discussed the Knowles Dam as part of the Columbia River treaty implications. Robinson argued an 8 percent minimum return and possible double benefit, while Corette predicted likely ratification of treaty. Army Corps estimates put benefit to cost at 1.7 to 1 without Canadian storage and 1.04 to 1 with it. Davis noted future closed sessions to decide on recommending the project.
