Tragic Wreck Claims Butte Painter Gale Smith
Blinding rain and a defective windshield wiper led to a fatal crash on Vigilante trail four miles north of Silver Star. Gale Smith, 38, a Butte painter and interior decorator, died when the car overturned after missing a curve. Mrs. Mabel Crawford, 36, survived with minor injuries. The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near Silver Star as the vehicle rolled about 70 feet. Crawford was unconscious at first but later revived enough to seek help for Smith. O. E. Hoover, a local Boy Scout executive, helped Crawford and then arranged medical aid for Smith with Dr. L. R. Packard in Whitehall.
