Royal Landing Expected Due to Faulty Computer

Houston AP reports the American space twins faced a troubled computer during a return from space. Flight director Christopher Kraft Jr said the issue does not affect safety and joked they might kick it. The computer timing helps manage thrust for a controlled entry.

Accidents Kill Five in State

Five people died in Montana in a string of traffic and related incidents reported Sunday. The tally includes Lewis Town child Greg Orley age 8, Bridger teen Terry Haney age 18, Glasgow resident Leo Belgarde age 29, Lewistown road worker James Plovane age 19, and Charles Meyer age 21 of St. Paul, Minn. Authorities noted the year’s road toll rose to 93 with two deaths not counted as traffic fatalities.

Anderson Urges Dissenters in Montana Mines Graduation

In the 65th Montana School of Mines graduation, Don Anderson of Lee Newspapers of Montana urged dissent as vital to national life. Dr. E G Koch awarded Anderson a doctor of letters while Vincent D Perry received a doctor of science in geological engineering for his contributions to modern geological methods and mineral resources development.

Nationwide Search Launched For Youth in Bank Slavings

A young Kansas gun enthusiast, Duane Pope, 22, is charged with bank robbery and the killings of Farmers State Bank of Big Springs president Andreas Kjeldgaard 77 cashier Glenn Hendricksen 35 and bookkeeper Lois Ann Hothan 35. A surviving employee Franklin Kjeldgaard is in a Denver hospital. Pope, a McPherson College graduate, fled after a green rented car linked to him was found.

Eight Marines Feared Dead After Sea Collision

Two US Marine helicopters collided soon after takeoff from the USS Iwo Jima over the South China Sea. Eight crew members aboard the two helicopters were presumed killed, marking the second such crash in ten days.

Plane Missing Over Atlantic With Ten Aboard

A twin engine Air Force C119 with ten men aboard is missing and presumed down in the Atlantic near the Bahamas. Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy units conduct a search in a 2000 square mile area southeast of Miami. Nine crew members are said to be from the Milwaukee area.

Young Kansas sheriff runs County's law in La Crosse

In Rush County Kansas 22 year old Sharon Mendenhall became the sheriff after winning the seat previously held by her husband. She and deputy-husband Jack Mendenhall share duties and salaries while managing a small rural county of about 7000. The couple plan to seek re election as she guards family quarters and handles radio.

Taylor Heads for Washington For Delayed Viet Nam Talks

U S Ambassador Maxwell D Taylor left Saigon for Washington after a 10 day delay amid political unrest. He will stay about a week as Quat cabinet tensions eased but Catholic sect violence and anti government protests continued. Marine artillery killed 80 Viet Cong and wounded 60, while eight Marines were feared dead in a helicopter crash off Chu Lai. American and Vietnamese air raids hit Dong Hoi and targets along roads and bridges.
