Voters in Silver Bow County begin an all day 10 hour poll period at 10 AM local time and finish at 8 PM, with ballots cast on machines across 48 polling places. Across Montana 54 counties vote on standard time while Silver Bow uses daylight saving time.
More than 1 000 absentee ballots were filed in Silver Bow County as William T. Duckham reported 1 039 ballots sealed for delivery. The tally shows a heavy primary election likely with 15 000 to 17 000 voters casting in Butte, Anaconda, and surrounding areas, shaping Democratic campaigns and statewide contests.
The Montana School of Mines awarded 42 degrees at its 60th commencement in Helena with 9 graduates and 33 undergraduates. Wayne E. Glenn of Continental Oil Co. urged hard work and teamwork as keys to success in an address. Glenn received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree and several other engineering diplomas were conferred.
The Labor Department released a list of 91 areas with substantial and persistent unemployment, including Butte and Kalispell, Montana. The index requires at least 6 percent unemployment and tests comparing past unemployment to national averages. Major areas show moderate spring employment gains, with some durable goods declines and signs of stabilization.

ENGADINE Mich AP A 70 year old woodman Arthur Le Gault fought a mother bear for 20 minutes in a Upper Michigan forest. He survived after using a jackknife to jab at the bear and escape. He was scratched and clawed but walked a mile to his home before being taken to Tahquamenon General Hospital by his son Thomas.
Dillon Anthony H. French, 92, was confirmed at St. James Episcopal Church in Dillon by Rt. Rev. Chandler Sterling, Bishop of Montana. Born November 9, 1867, in Bannack, he was baptized in 1877 by Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle, the first Episcopal bishop in Montana Territory. French recalls early Beaverhead County church history and received a 1877 Book of Common Prayer from Bishop Tuttle.
Casper Police Chief says Gale Long aged 18 and Bill Frazier aged 19 confessed to digging up a buried prospector on Casper Mountain and severing his head to decorate a car. The skull was identified as John Arnold 1935 death, buried near his cabin. They initially claimed to find the skull by an abandoned mine shaft.
G Roy Carkeet 53 of Butte died instantly when his car crashed on Squaw Creek Bridge in the Big Hole Basin late Sunday night. He lived at 1122 W Quartz and worked as a machinist for Anaconda Company. Coroner C Ralph Fischer said the vehicle left the bridge after entering from the Wisdom side and rolled over, with Carkeet ejected during the impact. The crash occurred about 35 miles from Divide between Divide and Wisdom. The report notes this was Montana’s 62nd traffic fatality of the year and Deer Lodge Countys third death.
Twenty seven people, including five children, were naturalized in Butte federal court with Judge W D Murray presiding. They aged three to 71 hail from eleven countries including Germany Greece Finland Japan Norway England Italy Canada Mexico and the Philippine Republic. Those over 21 took the oath in open court and signed later in the clerk's office becoming citizens. parents took oaths for the children under 18. One girl over 18 but under 21 has citizenship duties but cannot vote yet.
Voters across Montana head to polls from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in larger precincts and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. elsewhere to determine party nominees and nonpartisan Supreme Court candidates. About 170000 people are expected to cast ballots amid warm, shower-prone weather and heavy races including the U.S. Senate and House seats.
In Helena on Monday legal steps sought to keep a contentious proposed amendment on Montana school operations from appearing on the November election ballot. The case details actions by state officials and court proceedings related to ballot access.
Two of Montana's six district probation and parole officers were fired by the Montana Pardons Board, joining a third recent dismissal. Walter B. Jones Jr. of Bozeman and William Willard of Wolf Point said the firings occurred at a Deer Lodge meeting last Thursday. They linked the action to backing former director William A. May's parole philosophy, while the board cited inexperience for Willard's case.
County and city offices will close Tuesday with few exceptions. The county clerk and recorder, law enforcement agencies, and state liquor stores will remain closed. Taverns face voting hour closures 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Butte requires parking meters to be fed as usual.
A father Peter George Allen and his daughter Thespina Allen, former Greece residents, were naturalized in federal court ceremonies Monday. Judge W. D. Murray presided as the Allens and many others became American citizens.
