Wages seen as key to welfare costs fight in Senate
Democratic and Republican liberals press a $2.20 minimum wage as the best way to aid the poor while trimming welfare costs. Sen. Harrison Williams Jr. chairs the labor panel backing the raise from $1.60 to $2.20 and plans to file the report midweek ahead of the Democratic National Convention. He cites a four person family earning $3,200 a year under $2.00 and $1.60 baselines, arguing $2.20 would lift many above poverty. A study under Nixon welfare reform shows a family head could receive only $107 yearly in federal grants at the $2.00 level. Hodgson opposes both the $2.20 and extended coverage to 9 million more workers. Liberal gains in committee face a tougher floor battle against a Republican-Southern Democratic coalition.

A Glendive woman Barbara Malarchick 41 and her daughter Mary 7 died in a head on crash west of Glendive on Montana 200. The truck driver Kenneth Mitchell of Glendive survived. State meetings under way for Montana boys and girls
From Montana, high school girls gathered in Helena and boys in Dillon to start the annual Boys and Girls State meetings. The programs run a week of government study with elections for state officers and a vote on the proposed constitution.
