President Nixon urged Americans to reject isolationist theories and defend military strength abroad and at home. Speaking to 676 graduates at the U S Air Force Academy he warned against appeasing critics and warned that unilateral arms cuts would be disastrous for the nation and world.
The forecast calls for continued warm conditions with a high around 85 and a low near 48. The outlook appears in the weather table on Page 2.
Deer Lodge Montana two well known businessmen Don Tavenner and Frank Shaw Sr were burned in a private helicopter crash on the Tavenner Ranch north of Deer Lodge Both men ages 57 and 54 suffered facial arm and leg burns though not life threatening and were admitted to Powell County Memorial Hospital The crash occurred as the helicopter was landing pitching into a hillside and bursting into flames after reaching the ranch house
Butte logged its warmest day in 10 months at 88 degrees on Wednesday. The last higher reading was 89 on August 7, 1968, with June forecasts predicting continued warmth through Friday and a 40 percent rain chance through Thursday night.

James Dunford 24 of 804 Silver Bow Homes Butte died instantly when his car struck a concrete bridge pillar and burst into flames on Interstate 90 five miles east of Missoula. Officers said he fell asleep at the wheel. no skid marks were found. He was a UM graduate student planning to join the Atomic Energy Commission. For the third straight year two Butte High School seniors graduate with a 4.0 GPA. Co valedictorians are Rhonda Elaine Farrow and Daniel John Ducich, while salutatorian Lawrence Tait Jones has a 3.958 GPA. Commencement for 506 seniors is at 8 p.m. in the Civic Center Auditorium with Howard C. Porter as speaker. Survivors of the USS Frank E. Evans told Navy investigators they had no warning before the Australian carrier Melbourne cut their ship in two in the South China Sea.74 American crewmen died. The bow sank. the stern crew fought for survival. The testimony came as the Kearsarge carried 199 survivors toward Subic Bay Philippines.
James E. Flanigan 21 of Bozeman reports he is safe aboard the USS Kearsage after the USS Frank E. Evans was rammed and cut in half by an Australian carrier during maneuvers in the South China Sea. Three sailors were listed as lost: Robert J. Searle 20 of Great Falls and Seaman Michael K. Clawson of West Yellowstone and Salt Lake City.
