Informants warned the withdrawal announcement could include a proviso linking pace to enemy responses. Officials said large attacks against South Vietnamese forces replacing frontline U.S. troops might lead Saigon and Washington to suspend withdrawals temporarily.

Navy declares 73 men missing after the USS Frank E. Evans was cut in half in the South China Sea by the Australian carrier Melbourne. Among the missing are Robert J. Searle of Great Falls and Michael K. Lawson of West Yellowstone. three Sage brothers from Niobrara Neb. are also reported missing.

Glacier National Park continues to draw large crowds despite a 1967 grizzly mauling that killed two teens. Park official Keith Neilson reported 960,000 visitors last year and a May 31 count of 59,865 for 1969, up 38 percent from 1968.
The Boeing 747 jumbo jet completed a non stop nine hour eight minute flight from Seattle to Paris in its first Atlantic crossing. Pilot Don Knutson called the plane the nicest and best flying he ever had his hands on as spectators and officials welcomed the giant at Le Bourget Field amid rain and low visibility.
