English explorer to voyage Africa in dug out canoe
Forty year old Francis Brenton of Chicago plans a 15000 mile solo voyage in a 26 foot dug out canoe to Africa and South America. He will cross the Atlantic without sextant or radio using solar navigation and currents to guide him. Brenton, born in Liverpool, hopes to gather primitive art and fishing tools for a Field Museum display. He has sailed from Colombia to Chicago in a 22 foot canoe, survived a Gulf hurricane, and previously crossed the South Atlantic in a 24 foot sloop. He plans to lash a 42 pound fiberglass kayak to his canoe for inland waterways exploration.
