The Bureau of Agricultural Economics estimates 1938 gross farm income at 9.22 billion dollars from production and subsidies, down from 1937's 10.35 billion. States show declines such as Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, with 1937 and 1938 figures listed for each.
The bureau reports 1938 gross income at 7.538 trillion from farm marketings and 482 billion from government benefits with 1.2 trillion in products kept for home use. Crops receipts fell about 18 percent from 1937 to 1938, led by grains fruits vegetables and cotton, while livestock declined under 9 percent. Government payments rose 31 percent.
Washington reports say Admiral William D. Leahy, retiring chief of naval operations, may become secretary of the Navy replacing Claude A. Swanson. Leahy, 64, was to retire May 31 but is kept on by President Roosevelt to aid defense legislation.
Police search all possible crews to identify the man who stabbed John Davis a South Arizona Street bartender at 2:30 AM. Davis, home at 2216 Ottawa, is in St James hospital with deep knife wounds to the abdomen while attempting to eject a man from the Dinty Moore saloon at 557 South Arizona. Wounded bartender and other patrons could not identify the assailant. Continued on Page 2 Col 5.
Members of Silver Bow County Medical Society meet at 8 30 tonight in the Butte Town club to finalize plans for the state convention to be held June 28 29 and 30. Dr C R Canty is general chairman and the gathering is expected to attract over 250 physicians. Dr R F Peterson and others will discuss observations from the St Louis American Medical Association meeting tonight.
Montana farmers look to large yields as prospects brighten after rains. State agriculture commissioner James T. Sparling, returning from tours in eastern and north central Montana, notes moisture is ample and wheat is growing well, though grasshopper damage may affect eastern and north central areas.
Washington reports officials weigh moving tens of thousands of German Jewish refugees to the Philippines to offset Japanese influence. A survey by a special committee is due back, with Mindanao eyed for about 30 000 exiles as Davao and Japanese presence in the region draw attention.
Secretary of Interior Harold L. Ickes arrived in Albuquerque on June 4 on the eve of the University of New Mexico commencement. He advised the Democratic party to nominate President Roosevelt for a third term, saying a nominee who is sure to win would be Roosevelt.
Clarence Giles of Glendive completed a 62 mile trial swim from Terry to Glendive in seven hours, a warm up for his planned 238 or 288 mile Billings to Glendive swim on June 30, aiming to break the freshwater record. He left Terry at 5 am and finished at noon, aided by the year’s highest river tide.
In Birkenhead England June 4 salvage vessels and 30 divers labored over the sunken Thetis off Liverpool bay 130 feet deep as authorities reveal 99 dead including Donald Vivian Tyler 42 a Vickers armstrong fitter aboard during a trial run. The task faced strong currents and limited salvage time.
Matana forecast shows unsettled conditions on Monday with likely thunderstorms and cooler eastern areas. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures in the western portion.
President Roosevelt may appoint Jesse Jones RFC chairman as administrator of a unified federal lending agency to be created July 1. The agency would combine RFC, Electric Home and Farm authority, Mortgage, Disaster Loan, Federal National Mortgage Assn, Homeowners' Loan, Federal Savings and Loan Insurance, Federal Housing administration, and Export-Import Bank. Jones would direct loans to small businesses if Mead bill passes, with RFC guarantees on small loans and reforms discussed by the Federal Reserve.
A fire at a wooden shack movie theater in Zacatepec Mexico killed 32 people and injured 25. The blaze spread to 200 houses in the sugar town founded two years ago when a modern mill built by St Louis engineers operated at a cost of 13 million pesos. The fire started in the projector, apparently from a short circuit.
An attendance of more than 200 engineers their wives and friends is expected at tonight's dinner meeting of the Montana section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at the Finlen hotel.
