The British submarine Thetis sinks in Liverpool Bay during a test dive. Admiralty confirms 98 men perished, the greatest loss in submarine history. Water seepage into batteries likely produced chlorine gas killing crew, with 36 hours elapsed before confirmation of death.
London reports the first day of Britain's draft as youths aged 20 to 21 queued for numbers under the new six month training draft law. Registration began slowly in the capital with many delaying until weekend holidays. Medical exams start June 8 and 40 000 to 50 000 will be called on July 15.
Twenty two teams have registered for the first aid contest at Columbia Gardens on Sunday July 2 with more entries expected. The event is directed by the U S Bureau of Mines and sponsored by Anaconda Copper Mining Company and forms part of Butte s Treasure State Jubilee. A similar contest will be held in Anaconda on Saturday June 17 with 18 teams from various departments of the smelter. A practice contest is set for Monday June 12 at Washoe park starting 7 PM.
The outlook for Montana calls for unsettled weather on Sunday and Monday with likely showers and cooler conditions Sunday.
Members of the Butte Pioneers' club to honor those who died since June 1, 1938, at a memorial program in the American Legion hall Tuesday at 8 15 p m. Henry Pissot presides, James T Finlen Jr. delivers the memorial address. The list of deceased includes Frederick Langdon and 21 others. TheProgram includes invocation by Rev A C Caton and remarks by chairman H F Pisset.
Western states Nebraska Wyoming and Colorado have spent over a quarter million dollars in four years fighting over water from the North Platte river. The federal government now seeks control of all unappropriated waters of interstate streams, prompting California to consider intervention to protect state rights. The North Platte dispute began when Nebraska filed in 1935 to challenge Wyoming’s water rights, with Wyoming’s case framed by a Torrington hearing.
Havana sources report a possible Cuban landing for about 907 German Jewish refugees aboard the liner St. Louis after earlier rejection. Former Federal Circuit Judge Martin T. Manton was convicted by a federal jury of conspiracy to obstruct justice and deprive the United States of impartial services. Co defendant George M. Spector was convicted on the same charges. Bail for Manton set at $10,000 with Spector at $17,000. maximum penalties include two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The verdict followed an 11 day trial with a quick jury decision.
