Loyal Democrats in Alabama Cinch State Control

Loyal Democrats won five of seven seats on the Alabama Democratic executive committee in the May 31 runoff primary, giving regulars a stable majority. They had already captured 38 of 72 seats in the May 2 primary, with a contested few still unresolved. States Righters gained two runoff seats in the Ninth district, but regulars regain control of party machinery statewide.

Six Major Forest Fires Sweep Nova Scotia

Six major forest fires raged across Nova Scotia on Wednesday, consuming about 18 000 acres of timber along a 200 mile front from the Halifax Colchester county border near Denas settlement to east of Como Lake. The Halifax Pulp and Paper industry could be wiped out if winds shift toward Sheet Harbor 50 miles northeast of Halifax.

Library Opens Summer Schedule In Butte

The Butte public library will start summer hours on Thursday June 1 under city librarian Lula Eschle. From June 5 to June 10 the library will accept returns only while staff shelves and re registers shelves. Regular hours run 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, closed Sundays. The schedule continues through Labor Day September 4.
