Chief Justice Earl Warren said he would remain on the bench if Abe Fortas is not confirmed as his successor. He stressed he is bound by oath but expects Fortas to be approved and become a great chief justice. Warren had offered to retire in a June letter to President Johnson.

Fire in Helena area kills birds and animals
A Helena area fire destroyed 19 wildlife exhibit animals at the Fish and Game Department shelter north of Helena. Calf elk, three coyotes, six foxes, seven deer fawns, an eagle and an owl died. Rescuers saved a marmot, a deer, an antelope, a bear cub and a timber wolf as the shelter, unattended, burned believed electrical.

Old prospector laid to rest in Highland City Cemetery
John Wehmas 82 longtime Highland City resident prospector and timber cutter was interred Friday in the Highland City Cemetery. Howard Stratton arranged the burial after Wehmas died last May and wanted to be laid to rest where he worked. The funeral at Wayrynen Funeral Home featured Rev Niilo Seppala and was the first burial in the cemetery since 1933.

Ten deaths from Montana holiday traffic toll
A string of fatal crashes and a drowning on Montana highways since Wednesday pushed the July Fourth weekend toll to 109, tying or approaching a 1959 peak. Victims include Julia and Melvin Hage of Seattle and several Montana residents. authorities cited belt use and one overturned semi as factors.

Viet allies uncover rocket caches near Saigon
U S and South Vietnamese troops probing jungles and tunnels found a trove of weapons 30 miles northwest of Saigon including 35 Red Chinese made 107mm rockets and a bunker complex with 82mm mortars 24 rounds 110 rocket grenades and seven launchers. General's Kin Killed in Vietnam Helicopter Crash
Lt. Col. Frederick Van Deusen, 37, was killed Wednesday when his helicopter was shot down in the Mekong Delta. He was the brother of Mrs. William C. Westmoreland, U.S. Army chief of staff, and a Fayetteville, North Carolina native. Johnson invited him and others to lunch. Ray Earl Ray to fight King assassination charges in UK
James Earl Ray’s American attorney said Ray will plead not guilty if trial occurs in the case over Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death. Attorney Arthur J. Hanes met Ray at Wandsworth Prison in London and described Ray’s health as good while noting extradition issues on appeal.
