Montana Fourth of July toll rises to six deaths

The Associated Press reports six people died in Montana during the Fourth of July holiday from two car crashes a pedestrian incident and a drowning. Names include Ervin G. Stanfield 75 of Great Falls and Robert C. Buck 58 and his wife Josephine 56 of Kalispell along with Mrs John Little 21 and her son Bryant 2 of Crow Agency.

About 30 000 people celebrate Buttes Uncle Sam birthday parade on a clear 73 degree day. Spectators admired patriotic floats including Little Pigs Snow White and Noahs Ark, with judges praising colors and themes. parade ended with a late 11 30 finish and continued on page 13.

Four Butte Boys Overcome by Truck Exhaust in Parade

Four Butte youths riding in a Central Class Spectators truck were overcome by carbon monoxide near the parade end on Harrison Avenue. G W Fischer and Billy Markovich were revived by resuscitator and taken to hospital in good condition. Joseph Taras and John Taras were hospitalized in serious to good condition.

Briton Alec Rose sails solo world voyage ends in hero’s welcome

Alec Rose, a 59 year old vegetable dealer from Portsmouth, completed a 28 500 mile solo voyage in the ketch Lively Lady. He feared the crowds but emerged to a flotilla of 300 boats and 200 000 cheering spectators. Royal congratulations followed as he anchored, kissed his wife and daughter, and prepared to attend Buckingham Palace lunch.

The Big Bad Wolf float from Bob and Joe's Three Little Pigs scene won the grand prize in Butte's Fourth of July parade. Cash and trophy awards followed in several divisions, with first place in Commercial awarded to First National Bank for Tree for Your Future and Montana Power for See Montana Between the Parks.

Quakes Strike Southern California Causing Light Damage

Six rolling earthquakes rocked the Santa Barbara area and greater Los Angeles region with a 5.0 quake as the strongest. Reports cited cracked roads near Santa Barbara, swaying lights and chairs in Camarillo and a crowded Hollywood Park stands tremor affecting about 48 thousand fans. Residents from Ventura to downtown Los Angeles felt the tremors during a busy Fourth of July period.

Three Men Burned In Lewiston Speedway Mishap

At the Lewiston Clark Sports Arena stock car races three men suffered burns when a car lost control and slammed into an infield ramp. Gerald Ginsback 31 of Asotin Washington died later in Clarkston Washington hospital. Victor L Davis 49 of Clarkston remained in critical condition with burns to head and body. Daryl Sattler 26 of Lewiston also hospitalized in critical condition.

Melbourne Protesters Attack U S Consulate in Australia

About 2 000 demonstrators clashed with police at the U S consulate in Melbourne. They threw smoke bombs and stones, then dispersed after arrests. Protesters expressed antiwar views opposing U S intervention in Vietnam and marched to the nearby police line.

Butte Fourth Celebration Off Today with Youth Sports and Events
