Three strong earthquakes struck Luzon in the Philippines causing widespread damage across cities including Manila. One death and about 20 injuries were reported amid landslides and isolated towns as authorities warned of aftershocks and continued to assess casualties.
Mostly cloudy with scattered snow flurries and cooler temperatures on Friday. Frigid night with low around 25 and a high near 35, site readings at School of Mines and airport show similar cool conditions. West of divide expect showers then snow flurries late afternoon, high 35 to 45. East of divide see showers west and central, warmer inland, colder in far north late afternoon, highs 45 to 55.

The Federal Reserve reports industrial production rose nearly 3 percent in November, aided by the end of the steel strike and full scale operation in soft coal mines in late November. Mines have returned to a three day week.
Alphonse Tafoya, 37, a Butte miner, faces a federal firearms act charge for transporting a firearm across a state line after a violent-crime conviction. The case, filed Tuesday by J. H. Cosgriff, sets bond at 1000 dollars. Tafoya awaits plea Friday at 10 am and is jailed. He allegedly fired a .25 caliber pistol at William Stewart on November 27 and has prior murder sentences from Canon City, Colorado. Stewart had filed a first-degree assault complaint.
In Goffstown New Hampshire on December 29 a respected Manchester physician Dr. Herman N. Sander aged 40 was charged with the mercy slaying of 59 year old cancer patient Mrs Abbie Botero Hillsboro County Solicitor William H Craig said the doctor signed a hospital record stating he injected air into her veins as an act of mercy. Dr Sander pleaded innocent in municipal court to a first degree murder charge.
The Navy announced that the aircraft carrier Boxer and two destroyers Buck and Thomason will sail from San Diego to the western Pacific January 11 to bolster the Seventh Fleet. The Essex class carrier carries about 100 aircraft and will bring U S naval strength in the region to parity with the Mediterranean fleet amid Formosa tensions.
UN Secretary General Trygve Lie calls East and West to resume gradual negotiations toward settling the great power conflict that delays peace. He notes UN gains in 1949 and cites the 1948 Mexican resolution urging renewed efforts for lasting peace.
A Build Butte committee spokesman argued that many crafts workers cannot endure an eight hour day. He warned older workers may lose jobs to younger entrants and that six hours can yield more work. He noted craftspeople in other towns already endure longer days.
