Salt Lake City December 29 Special National Parks Airways Inc operating the Salt Lake City to Great Falls air mall line reports four months flying nearly complete with 145 round trips and 157 920 miles accumulated The line carried 23169 pounds of mail and 742 passengers during the period averaging about 6000 pounds of mail monthly Four pilots flew the mail and passengers and two Wright Whirlwind Stearman planes were added for winter traffic as the company prepares a broader service next year Christmas week mail service showed gains over other lines.
Potential expansion of the National Parks airways line from Butte to Missoula is under consideration with possible further extension to Spokane if the Post Office Department grants authorization. The note indicates continuation on Page 2, Col. 4.
Helena report shows Montana farms produced crops worth 121.287 million dollars in 1928, making it the second largest crop year in state history. Acreage rose to 7.677 million acres, with yields 28.7 percent above the 10-year average for 19 crops but 15.6 percent below 1927’s per acre yield. Farm prices shifted with corn flax beans peas and hay higher, wheat and potatoes lower.
Salt Lake City Utah December 29 A man identified as John Gibson wanted for the six year old murder of James Papacostas at Helper Utah was pursued. Four men arrested at Tono Nevada on a federal charge. Sheriff M Bliss of Carbon county ordered to Nevada next week. The net known as John Martin or Bud Stabler was arrested on a charge of raising dollar bills to tens and twenties and is held for federal officers.
In Helena on December 29 the Montana Industrial Accident board weighs whether audience actions like firing a six gun at an actor are covered hazards. A Negro performer named Sho was shot by a woman in the audience as his Miles City act ended, seeking accident compensation from the theater insured by the state.
Dec 29 Chicago announces a new branch of the municipal court devoted to racketeering and bootlegging. Chief Justice Harry Olson said the court will handle cases involving protection racketeering, business injury, and bootlegging, aiming to empower prosecutors and curb evidence leaks before warrants are served.
More than 700 Butte Masons gathered at the Masonic temple for the installation of officers from six Blue lodges Summit Valley Butte Silver Bow Mount Moriah Highland and Monitor lodges. Grand officers Francis Hargerstrom Luther Hauberg and George Craven attended with past grand masters Lewis A. Smith Len Parmalee and Dr G Roach of Milwaukee guest. A banquet followed with brief remarks from visiting grand officers and newly installed worshipful masters EB Rule John Hattrick Lester Wright Gus Keppner H D Blair and Joseph Harris. Monitor lodge led the program.
The Supreme Court was asked to pass on all phases of the appeal of Harry F. Sinclair from his misdemeanor conviction for refusing to answer questions of a senate committee. A motion filed by Owen J. Roberts and Atlee Pomerene urged the court to take this course for guidance while the Sinclair appeal awaits the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ruling.
Four young people from prominent Kenosha families die in a collision involving two autos and a Chicago and Northwestern train. The deceased include Ferrin Alford, son of W H Alford of Nash Motors. Lowell Smith, son of A B Smith, Nash Motors official. Alice Judd, daughter of Clark Judd, American Brass vice president. and Mary Salter, granddaughter of Municipal Judge John Slater. Several others are hospitalized.
Leslie Wilfred Ott, 16, died at Hamilton hospital after a tree fell during his father's felling operation. A fractured skull and a broken arm were listed as the causes of death. The incident occurred as the boy watched his father cut the tree. another boy nearby was slightly injured. He lived with Mr and Mrs August W Ott on a ranch near Corvallis.
Montana stands eighth among the 48 states in citizens postal savings on June 30, with $6,294,396 deposited, up $753,452 from 1927. New York tops the list with $32,223,493, figures released by Postmaster Richard Brimacombe show.
A coroner’s jury in Butte ruled that Yen Shee caused the death of a 24 year old woman from opium use. The deceased was identified by various names at the inquest, with no clear record of her own. She died December 21 at St James Hospital after being found in the Hoffman block.
